Re: 2016 Tour Rumors
Am I the only one that feels like PJ20 was not that long ago (as in, less than 5 years), and thus, PJ25 feels too soon/repetitive? Are we going to have a PJ30/35/40/45/50? What about new music and tour, like regular. Feels more like they've rushed to get to the celebratory phase, while they're still young, healthy, and creative. And yes, we can all agree it's definitely waned, but still, this celebration stuff seems odd to me.
Twenty years was neat. Now this will be based around R n R HOF. I suppose I can understand both of those, but it's not like they have to campaign for the HOF, they're a shoe-in first ballot.

It feels like just the other day PJ was opening for Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers on their 30th anniversary tour. Not to mention PJ20 felt like yesterday.wilkins wrote:Am I the only one that feels like PJ20 was not that long ago (as in, less than 5 years), and thus, PJ25 feels too soon/repetitive? Re: 2016 Tour Rumors
IMHO the band really dropped the ball with the whole PJ 20 scenario.
1) They decided to do a celebration weekend opening their tour. They are always awful after a long layoff, history shows they sound better towards the end of tours. PJ20 was a mess, it hasn't been released because they know it sucks. Let's not forget they did it in the middle of fucking Wisconsin!
2) How do you only plan a tour that goes through Canada and Latin America? Your an american band!, I'm not from Seattle and I know crowds have sucked as of late, but how can you not do a single show in your hometown?
3) What special thing did they really give to fans? The ten and vs/vitalogy boxes in my mind don't count.
4) The PJ20 film, I loved it, but let's not forget that they pretty much skipped over the entire 2000-2008 area of there career.

OY! Its on the southern edge of Wisconsin! and Alpine Valley is considered one of thee best outdoor venues in the U.S.
the bigger problem was holding it Labor Day Weekend. anyone from Wisconsin can tell ya it always rains Memorial Day weekend and Labor Day weekend.

Unfortunately I wasn't at PJ20 so can't comment, but I will say Alpine Valley is amazing. I'm assuming you haven't been there before based on comment #1.lowlight79 wrote:IMHO the band really dropped the ball with the whole PJ 20 scenario.

I thought the film PJ20 was pretty meh. I feel the most interesting part of their career, 1994 through 2000, was glossed over. Seemed to be a lot of Ten/Vs/Vitalogy > new day PJ. For the Blu Ray, disc two is kinda cool, and I love the version of Not For You with Jack. It's unreal good.

Re: 2016 Tour Rumors
Back to PJ20 in 2011 in East Troy, WI.
Why in the hell would they want to play there again for PJ25? When they played there last, they didn't even come close to filling Alpine Valley, both nights, and it rained like crazy. Me and my girlfriend were going to go, but after the RATM show there in 2007, we decided against it and went to the Toronto shows instead.
And the Rage show was insanely packed to capacity plus, around 40,000. The best/intense show I have ever seen in my 35 years of going to concerts. And it stormed like a motherfucker then, too.
Pearl Jam needs to pass on Alpine Valley for PJ25, especially if you only fill the venue up halfway. Better off playing at The Gorge or Wrigley!

Re: 2016 Tour Rumors
For a band whose public identity is so tied to their home city, Wisconsin was a pretty weird choice for a place to celebrate their 20th anniversary. The shows themselves felt odd to an observer too, weird setlists and odd choices of special guests. The whole exercise came across as being quite haphazard and not well thought through.
If there are plans in the works for a big 25th anniversary blowout in Seattle or The Gorge, I wonder if the band felt the same way in retrospect and wanted the opportunity for a do-over.

Re: 2016 Tour Rumors
they held PJ20 at alpine valley because it's essentially considered a chicago venue and in the middle of the country. they anticipated many would travel to the shows, so they tried to put it in a central location.

Re: 2016 Tour Rumors
Sure, but they're a Seattle band whose history and public persona is very linked to the city and its music scene. It would seem like the obvious, meaningful choice for an anniversary show. From an outsiders perspective, I think I'd prefer to travel to Seattle for that reason.
Alpine Valley seems as weird a venue as holding the shows at some random field in Kentucky or whatever.

Re: 2016 Tour Rumors
i was surprised the shows weren't in seattle myself, but it's known that the band hasn't been very enamored with the hometown crowds these days, and it's also known that alpine is a favorite of the band's. also, i think they realized that hotels in the area would be more reasonable than in a major city, and again, it's only a 1.5-2 hour drive from chicago/o'hare (one of the largest airports in the country). it made more sense than you realize.

Re: 2016 Tour Rumors
We stayed at a resort in Lake Geneva called the Grand Geneva; it wasn't cheap. All hotels and resorts have the right to jack their rates up (it's usually listed on the door). And usually this is done when they know big events are coming to their area.
Hell, back in 2007, Rage played on a Friday, then the next two nights the Dave Matthews Band played. All sold out.
The central location thing failed back in 2011 at Alpine Valley; especially when the venue is only half filled with shitty weather to boot.
They need to play elsewhere in July 2016.
