At this point I'd rather have a new TOOL album than what PJ has become (OLD)

Tool is boring.

The phrase 'still knows how to rock' always sounds like it's coming from someone who has no idea what 'rocking' looks like. We're all getting old, and that'll take a different shape depending on the band. People who do not know how to rock might still be good in other areas.

Also, Pearl Jam never 'rocked' like Tool. Tool was more metal from day one.

Tool's last album was incredibly disappointing.

I loved Tool in the early aughts, but by 2007 I was pretty much over them.

Aghhhh i can agree to an extent in regards to TOOL but their music has stayed the same. IMO PJ had been deteriorating and it's all due to what we all debate over, Eddies shrinking vocal chords.

I don't think they've stayed the same. Plenty of Tool fans think their early work is better. Same with QOTSA, or any band you'd care to name. The grass isn't always greener.

There was a STEEP decline between Lateralus and 10,000 Days. Honestly, I thought Lateralus wasn't as good as Aenima or Undertow either, but I can see why someone would love Lateralus. 10,000 Days was really boring.

I think Lateralus is easily their best and 10,000 Days is pretty great too. I think the latter is easily a more well-crafted album than Undertow (and, while I'm not sure it's better, I'd listen to it in preference to Ænima most of the time.)

so your point is that tool continues to make the same type of album, but is getting less good at it. That seems like something all bands should aspire to.

I'll listen to Tool's next album, and probably be excited for it. Every band I love or loved gets a bad album free pass before I start to worry. But I'd hardly hold tool up as a model. 4 albums in 20 years is none too impressive.

If the single is released on July 16 can we then determine the album release date based on history?

Edit. Based on backspacer it looks like its a one month timetable between single and album release.
