Gallup wrote:While many critics sniped about The Phantom Menace, the American public clearly comes down on the positive side of the ledger when they are asked to evaluate it. Over three-quarters of those who have seen the film describe it as "good," "excellent" or as "one of the greatest they had ever seen," although of this number only 3% say it is one of the greatest movies they have ever seen, with 33% calling it excellent and 40% labeling it as "good". Just 21% rate it as only "fair" or "poor."
This was over a month after its release.

Ratings were even higher on Star Wars fansites at the time. But of course you can't find a single person who liked it ever, now.

I dont like how they came in contact with Han. That was just a little too weak.

Pandora as a world was pure magic in its realization - and then they saddled it with a weak plot and weaker characters. But I was so swept away I didn't notice until the second viewing

The story is riddled with conveniences but the feel is perfect and the characters are wonderful (according to everyone on the planet except LV and the people at national review who are upset that the leads are a woman who didn't need to be rescued and a black man who isn't a backstabbing sexual predator) so you can forgive the story (as is often the case with the OT which is similarly drowning in plot conviences) . It's a very good movie and a great Star Wars movie

Agreed but it is it any worse than obi wan showing up to save Luke from sand people just as the galaxy needed him or Han finding Luke in a hoth blizzard seconds before he dies from exposure?

Good point. Being that I love STar Wars, I could see a 10 hour movie to have all this stuff fleshed out but that certainly isn't realistic.

I can't wait to see this again.

Also, I was really excited about Chewies utilization and performance. He was aggressive. He was playful. I was very happy to see him come out alive to help save the day. I think its awesome he will be around.

Star Wars was meaningful character arcs and breathtakingly imaginative visuals. The stories (even the great movies) were always simplistic and full of holes. I hold out hope Rian Johnson gives us all 3, but given the nature of the series the plot will always be the least important piece
