I didn't really catch on to the Falcon line, and since its been pointed out here it doesn't bother me one bit. Its a cool-as-fuck moment and it got cheers in the cinema I was in.

I guarantee, if they'd not said anything and just had Rey/Finn run to the Falcon without any sort of clue/build up then people would complain. It wasn't even that big of a telegraphed moment. The scene was flying along at such a fast pace; Finn & Rey running towards the first ship, delivering the line, first ship exploding, Falcon reveal was about 6 seconds in total.

Rey and Finn stumbling upon The Falcon in an old junkyard/battlefield planet: not so crazy (given the setting)
Kylo being related to the Skywalkers: Completely fine.

Them stumbling on the Falcon there didn't bother me. It was the tipping of it ahead of time.

Before they see the shiny new ship, they say the whole "pile of junk" line about the offscreen falcon. At that moment it was obviously going to be the Falcon. Then the shiny new ship blows up and they reiterate the pile of junk line and then show the falcon. The first mention of it felt entirely gratuitous to me, and blew the reveal entirely. I knew from that moment the shiny new ship would not be an option and that they would turn and end up on the Falcon.

Interesting.

How else would you have it happen?
The rumour was Rey meets Han and Chewie digging around endless sand dunes looking for it and find it just in time to escape. Falcon is the first old character you meet in the film. Its reveal has to be great. Was for me.
Surely this way is better.

I would tend to agree with that. My point is that if an entire room of people cheer at a small moment, I would be inclined to believe that something had been done well.

That tiny moment was a nice little setup for the Falcon

Your problems are with movie making devices failing.
Not with Star Wars devices. This was a pure Star Wars device in the discovery of the falcon. It worked perfectly in that light.

There were clearly different ship designs between the prequels and the original trilogy. VII seems to be set about twenty years after VI, how much radical reimagining of ship design do you expect in that period?
