they're clearly not just aimed at kids (witness this thread). They are aimed at a innocent and a sense of unencumbered wonder, which is something we associate with childhood only because life hasn't beaten it out of you at that point. But there's something powerful about that feeling, which is why adults look for ways to recapture it.

This is all well and good but then don't rip apart a movie like ID2 for the same thing. Not you personally, spike, just people in generalspike wrote:my BB-8 stairs post in the other thread got me thinking how easy it is in the star wars world for everyone to access all areas. rey and BB-8 able to go down a stairwell and into an unlocked room to discover a mass of treasures, the pirates boarding han's freighter no problem, seemingly every door on starkiller base easily accessible by pressing a button or pulling down a latch. and of course the millenium falcon having no keys.
it's just another example of the importance of not taking the SW universe too seriously, including massive plot holes, the lack of character backstories, etc. these movies are really just big, dumb action movies aimed at kids, and they're meant to be fun first.

LV, the entire extended universe was predicated on that very concept. This was not an invention of JJ abrams, and one doesn't have to struggle to hard to wonder what might have happened to the millions of troops, hundreds of bases, and massive fleet in the aftermath of the loss of much of your senior leadership.spike wrote:lolLoathedVermin72 wrote:The celebration at the end of ROTJ was way more cathartic than just some leaders were killed and now someone else was just gonna step in. The Empire was destroyed. The war was over. I'm not cool with new filmmakers just stepping in and saying, "Oh, actually, the bad guys weren't defeated and now the Empire is just called something else." Bullshit.Strat wrote:Dude, all that happened in jedi was Vader and Palpatine were dismissed. There are still thousands of clones and soldiers around the galaxy. Someone stepped up into their place. THis HAPPENS IN THE REAL WORLD. Also, there is a story with Snoke.LoathedVermin72 wrote:lol @ the idea that TFA does this any meaningful way, or that this is what Kasdan was talking about. If anything, how there is now magically a new organization that is exactly like the Empire is something that needs to be explained way more urgently than all the other things that get talked to death through mindless exposition in this shitshow of a movie.Strat wrote:Is it difficult for you to read betweent he lines and connect dots? That would make sense considering blackhat and ridiculous 6....LoathedVermin72 wrote:lolololololStrat wrote:Yea i dont need those plot holes filled in. It doesnt matter. I believe this is what JJ was talking about when Kasdan told him to the trust the audience. I dont need to know exactly how and who the first order, or what the republic/resistance relationship is, or why the Falcon was on there. Its easy to read between the lines and ultimately it just doesnt fucking matter.
How is that difficult for you to comprehend? I truly am astounded.

I think it is a better argument than the narcissistic assumption that because I failed to experience something therefore the experience must not exist.LoathedVermin72 wrote:Great argumentstip wrote:I think that most of the world's reaction to this film probably begs to differ.LoathedVermin72 wrote:Except this movie doesn't have that at all.stip wrote:they're clearly not just aimed at kids (witness this thread). A genuine "sense of wonder" is always going to be totally subjective, even if we start getting into specific aesthetic choices, such as camera angles and whatnot. But I really don't see where there that sensibility comes through in the material, disregarding visceral reactions.stip wrote:I think it is a better argument than the narcissistic assumption that because I failed to experience something therefore the experience must not exist.LoathedVermin72 wrote:Great argumentstip wrote:I think that most of the world's reaction to this film probably begs to differ.LoathedVermin72 wrote:Except this movie doesn't have that at all.stip wrote:they're clearly not just aimed at kids (witness this thread). Sad you didn't get that sense of wonder from this LV.
What was the last film gave you that same sense?
