Sad you didn't get that sense of wonder from this LV.
What was the last film gave you that same sense?

If it is totally subjective then how can you disregard the visceral experience. That becomes the measure. As far as how it comes through in the material, there is 50 pages in this forum and thousands on the internet where people are laying out precisely when and where and how and why they were affected, to which your response again is 'I don't see it, so it doesn't exist.'LoathedVermin72 wrote:A genuine "sense of wonder" is always going to be totally subjective, even if we start getting into specific aesthetic choices, such as camera angles and whatnot. Things we have to look forward to.
EP 8 might take place a few years after 7.
Rey gets all trained up by Luke?
Luke and leia meeting again. Sister and brother.
The resistance returning to the republic and the full might of the republic rooting out Snoke and his forces.
Showdown with Kylo and Luke? Or Luke and Snoke (they'll save these for the final film)
Kylo meeting leia again. This almost had to happen in some form.
Luke destroys Snoke therefore clearing kylos mind of deception ?
Back to the light?
Poe Rey Finn Chewie new Falcon crew on some adventure to blow up or find something
Force ghosts. Obi wan? Yoda? Anakin?

Thousands of clueless fanboys jizzing themselves over "NEW SW THAT'S NOSTALGIC AND NOT LIKE THE PREQUELS OMG I'M CRYING" hardly qualifies as compelling evidence of what the movie is doing. In the end, if we're dealing in subjective, emotional responses, your visceral reaction is no more valid than my lack of one, even if a lot of people agree with you. We would need to break this down to the ideology of the film itself, and just saying shit like "Oh man thing X was great" or "the new characters really worked" isn't enough.stip wrote:If it is totally subjective then how can you disregard the visceral experience. Bad news for you LV
Rogue one is going to depend a lot more on established tropes and plot devices than any of these new trilogies.
Joe public is going to have to be spoon fed that it's Star Wars for them to know it's a Star Wars film

In EST, Luke has a scary, challenging vision and resultantly reflects on some hard truths - tries to sort out what it meant. Rey has a scary, challenging vision and resultantly cries, throws a fit, and runs out into the woods to pout.

Lenny takes it: $238 million.Simple Torture wrote:Update on this: it's estimated that TFA grossed $120 million domestically on Thursday/Friday, which breaks two records: largest Thursday-preview opening ever ($57 m) and largest one-day total ever ($120 m--keep in mind that for record keeping purposes, "one day" includes Thursday and Friday). Also keep in mind that these are estimates, and that these totals usually go up. Target to break the largest opening weekend ever is $208.8 m (Jurassic World). If I got another guess, I'd probably put it in Kaius' guess territory.Guesses for Opening Weekend US Domestic Gross:

Re: STAR WARS SPOILER THREAD. SPOILERS WITHIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Owen Lars wasn't Luke's uncle by blood. His father married Shmi Skywalker, so Anakin was his stepbrother in name onlystip wrote:It's like people complaining about Rey starting out on a desert. Yes, that's where Luke and anakin began but:
1. There are literally only 5 types of planets we ever see in star wars, and each one is an environmental theme (and see skitch's early point about filming on location and how that limits you)
2. The orphan starting alone is a standard hero's journey archtype. It wasn't original in Star Wars. It wasn't original in Harry Potter. But it doesn't need to be original. It helps us resonate with the character precisely because it isn't.
3. The fact that she's stuck on such a shit hole (worse than Tattoine) make her desire to go back and her longing for her family more poigniant. If she wanted to return to Maz's lush paradise planet who could blame her.
4. Luke grew up with a family. She grew up alone.
5. Tatooine had a civilization--poor and rural, but it was there. Luke grew up on a sandy frontier. Rey grew up in a wasteland and they did invest it with a different feel. If you get hung up on the presence of sand you're not looking beyond a pretty superficial level,.
6. Since Rey was abandoned (she was put there deliberately) some far out of the way place where no one would ever think to look (unlike the ridiculous decision to leave Luke with his actualy fucking uncle) makes sense.

LV, you remind me of one of my good friends who studied film in college. he's often so preoccupied with proper crane shots, etc. that he can't enjoy a movie like a normal person anymore. it happens, it's understandable, but just be aware of it.LoathedVermin72 wrote:A genuine "sense of wonder" is always going to be totally subjective, even if we start getting into specific aesthetic choices, such as camera angles and whatnot.
