they're clearly not just aimed at kids (witness this thread). They are aimed at a innocent and a sense of unencumbered wonder, which is something we associate with childhood only because life hasn't beaten it out of you at that point. But there's something powerful about that feeling, which is why adults look for ways to recapture it.

Except this movie doesn't have that at all.

I think that most of the world's reaction to this film probably begs to differ.

I think it is a better argument than the narcissistic assumption that because I failed to experience something therefore the experience must not exist.

A genuine "sense of wonder" is always going to be totally subjective, even if we start getting into specific aesthetic choices, such as camera angles and whatnot. But I really don't see where there that sensibility comes through in the material, disregarding visceral reactions.

LV, you remind me of one of my good friends who studied film in college. he's often so preoccupied with proper crane shots, etc. that he can't enjoy a movie like a normal person anymore. it happens, it's understandable, but just be aware of it.

I'm not fixated on technical minutiae, but I am concerned with the ideological and aesthetic fabric of a movie, as I would be with any work of art. That doesn't mean I don't enjoy watching movies. On the contrary - few things are more thrilling than watching a truly great movie.

I get his point about the sublime thing, and I can see LV being attracted to movies where people confront something that overpowers them and lays bare their own insignificance (man of steel, independence day, godzilla).

But to praise the character development in that movie...who was the lead? He was like half a step up from the guy in avatar.

Honestly, stip, it kinda is you, and I don't mean that to be insulting. Your views are just so fundamentally different from mine that we approach seemingly everything totally differently, which makes finding even enough common ground to agree on where to start debating something difficult. It's a lot of work.

Ford is a great example of liquid character development, in that a lot of who he is and what he is going through are portrayed in subtle ways that need to be intuited through small acting choices and metaphorical moments. It reminds me a lot of Three Colors: Blue.

Interesting. Theres the footage of him talking to rey, the ¨my father had it, my sister have it...¨ Thats a good point in the whole Rey is Luke´s daughter theory.

The Sun reported earlier this month that many of Lupita Nyong’o’s lines were cut because she failed to deliver as a motion capture artist. Whether that’s true or not, there were lines in pre-publicity trailers and TV spots - the whole “I’ve seen your eyes” fandango - that were notably absent from the final cut of The Force Awakens. Likewise, Luke’s dialogue with an unseen figure in which he discusses the strength of the Force in his family never made it - in fact we never got to hear the veteran Jedi Knight speak at all. This theory goes that both Kanata and Luke were due for much bigger parts - why was Mark Hamill at the initial read-through otherwise? - but for whatever reason ended up losing a whole lot of lines.

Plot holes filled: None. But the above does, perhaps, explain why so many fans were left completely bamboozled by The Force Awakens. And why we still don’t have an inkling what she was doing with Luke’s lightsaber.

Remaining problems: Unless Kanata and Hamill were both truly awful (and both sound fine in the dialogue we have heard) this just makes no sense. We can only assume Abrams ultimately decided against a long, slow scene at the end of The Force Awakens involving Luke, which does make a sort of sense - and has certainly whet appetites for Episode VIII.
