I like the idea that you become a jedi as a result of passing some sort of test external to the academy. Did they keep that in the prequels?

Sort of? Yoda "conferred" the title of Jedi Knight on Obi Wan after the events of Episode I, which seems to suggest you've got to go through something in order to prove your mettle. But even the action of "conferring" it bothered me.
