Hateful Eight last night in 70mm

Not really a great film story/character/etc-wise, but holy fuck was it beautiful & fun to watch.

The 70mm & crazy wide aspect ratio was unlike anything I've ever seen. If you live in a town that has the legit 70mm projection, GO.

Probably his best film since Jackie Brown. I was pretty unsure through most of the first half, but with an over-the-top scene right before the intermission, it won me over, and I had a blast in the wildly violent and funny second half. It began to subtly turn things that were bugging me on their head in a way I wasn't expecting from QT.

It's sort of like Reservoir Dogs reimagined as a 3-hour, 70mm, western gore comedy. I gotta chew on it for a while, but I definitely enjoyed it.

I wish the Screener quality was better. I guess they put them out in shitty quality to deter pirates, but wouldn't you want the Oscar judges to see a quality print of your movie?

I think it's a "beggars can't be choosers" situation quite frankly. I'll reserve my holiday theatre visits for Star Wars and Hateful Eight but many of these don't deserve it.

In the age of HD and Blu-ray, no way in fucking hell I'm settling for watching any new movie in anything less than the best possible quality.

Also, the cast is uniformly excellent. It's difficult to choose a standout because they were all so good. And Ennio Morricone hasn't lost his touch - one of the best scores I've heard in years.
