It's daunting even after getting sucked in by the first episode, because then you realize there are 9 hours left. If you're into true crime, give it a whirl.

Wrongful conviction really bugs me for some reason. More than most things.

Throw in really, really low IQ scores and you've got a sadness cocktail.

I don't think you need the "for some reason" there

That's one of the reasons I didn't keep going the other night. I'm too far behind. I need to finish Mr. Robot and Fargo before I get too wrapped up in another thing.

Ok well. This is obviously very one sided and my sisters good friend is actually one of the desk anchors prominently featured throughout....

She is kind of upset about the documentary because its heavy one sided, but also because she is friends with the daughter of Len k...something.....

However, there are just things about it that make no sense to me and tell me i dont need to hear both sides of the story to know it is fucked up.

The crime scene. No blood? Anywhere? really? He would be so careless as to leave bone fragments, the car (hello! he could have crushed it to pieces)? a bullet blood on the dashboard etc? yet able to completely clean the bedroom, living room, deck of all blood from him apparently slicing her throat? No bed markings from the apparent torture and rape?

Its unbelievable.

When it comes to Steven Avery, you can twist the evidence to tell all sorts of stories, like:

1. He killed her in the yard, drove her to the quarry, started the burn there, drove back to the house and finished it there.

2. She was killed in an undiscovered third location and driven back to the house to be burned.

3. She wasn't knifed up, but rather strangled, and then shot after she was dead (which would produce less blood).

The problem with each of these is that they each have significant holes (where's the rest of the blood? where's the third location? etc etc). However, even though everyone's innocent until proven guilty (or so they say), the prosecution does not need to fill in all the holes--just because there's no murder scene doesn't mean you can't convict. I've got bigger problems with:

1. The way they leaned on Avery's prior rape conviction--which everyone knew about--to impinge his character without ever actually mentioning his rape conviction (because, you know, he was later exonerated). There may not be anything illegal about this, but it's fucking slimy as hell.

2. Dassey's coerced confessions (both to the police and to his lawyer's investigator)--hot damn. This was the hardest thing to watch for me. The amount of times he changed his story, the amount of leading questions they asked, the amount of information they fed him, the way he obviously didn't understand the stakes involved--I really couldn't believe that. And, of course, his lawyer's role in the whole thing was fucking despicable. I can't believe they were allowed to use this--obliquely--during Avery's trial, and that Dassey couldn't get a retrial with it tossed out.

3. The poisoning of the jury pool with the press conferences and coverage of Dassey's confession, and then the way they used a different theory of the crime in the two trials. I just can't get over this.

4. The way the local county police endangered the investigation by overstepping their bounds--there's no way they should've been on the property at any time, much less illegally searching for the vehicle (which is almost definitely what that cop was doing when he called in the license plate number). Every piece of evidence from that probably should've been tossed.

There are others. I dunno if Avery did it--although I'm basically positive that Dassey didn't--but regardless, there were serious issues with the investigation and trial, and it paints the system in a bad light. It really makes you wonder about the "open and shut" cases that don't get a lot of press.

Ugh, everything regarding how Brendan Dassey was treated made me so furious and sad. Especially that scene where he had to write the "I'm sorry"-letter and draw what he "did and saw". That poor kid was so clueless that he thought he could go back to school an hour after confessing murder and rape. The only story he could consistently recall multiple times was the one where he didn't do anything.
Why the hell did the defense agree to omit the part of the confession where he told his mother he didn't do anything and that they only got to his head?
