Re: there's not a band of horses thr
I totally understand one's disinterest in a band like Band of Horses. But I goddamn love them. They aren't a band I'll go to the mattresses for. I'll just sip my whiskey and quietly appreciate them while others hash it out.
Those first three records really move me.

Do you mean "go to the mat?"durdencommatyler wrote:They aren't a band I'll go to the mattresses for.
"Going to the mattresses" makes me imagine you giving yourself up physically in exchange for someone's commitment to alter their view.
I mean, either way. I was just wondering.

Like the first 2 albums. Saw em live and it was overall pretty flat. Not enough to sustain 90mins+.

I saw them open for PJ and it was a lovely set. But shorter than 90 mins, obviously. And Ben sang Hunger Strike with Ed at the end and that was one of the highlights of my concert going life.LetMeSleep wrote:Like the first 2 albums. Saw em live and it was overall pretty flat. A shorter set would be great, 45-60mins.durdencommatyler wrote:I saw them open for PJ and it was a lovely set. But shorter than 90 mins, obviously. Yeah, that was the sweet spot.

That's kind of embarrassing. I should probably know Godfather references.
So does it mean loosely what I took it to mean?

Oh well. At least we're on the same side of this whole thing, J. Wanna listen to "Infinite Arms" tonight and pretend we're listening to it together?

One of the subtle but important shifts in how I consume and appreciate art over the last decade was ceasing to really care about an artists motivations behind why they do what they do. The story and motivations can provide an enlightening bit of context that can enhance an experience, but what matters is the way the audience (critical, public, and self) perceives and appreciates the result.tragabigzanda wrote:It's an unfortunately jaded opinion born from years of working with mediocre bands. I'm working on it.Kaius wrote:I don't know. That's seems like an ironically narrow-minded view of what makes good art.tragabigzanda wrote:Not saying I don't have an ego, or that artists shouldn't. Trying to say that great music either A) attempts to push boundaries or B) doesn't try to present itself as more important than it really is (like Kesha, Katy Perry, et al). Anything else is just noise to my ears.bada wrote:Everything humans do is based on ego. Even complaining someone has an ego strokes the accusers ego allowing them to feel superior. Forgot we had a dedicated thread.
New record is solid. Listened twice the other night and I really enjoy it. I think it's gonna open up a lot on further listening, too. Very pleased.

Love Cease To Begin and Everything All The Time. Both have been in heavy rotation here since 2007. Really weird discussion in this thread. Didn't really expect anything else though.

I'd put Infinite Arms above Everything All the Time. And, yes, I'm aware that I'm the only one who would.
But all three (including Cease) are great records. I listen to all three all the time, the rotation just depends on my mood. This new one will be a welcomed addition.
