Re: Star Wars: Episode VII: The Force Awakens (2015)
I don't like the Beatles, Neil Young, The Who, or any number of musical sacred cows. I can go on at length as to what I don't like about any of them. But after a while I have to admit that in the face of the critical and popular adulation these artists have sustained over time my issues are idiosyncratic to my personal tastes rather than anything inherently flawed in either those artists or (and this is important) the audience that appreciates them

The Beatles, Neil Young, and The Who are a flawless comparison to TFA. I see no problems with that example at all.

"If you had been told ahead of time that this movie was about an orphan on a desert planet who is strong with the force helping a droid on a secret mission with help from Han Solo and Chewbacca, and eventually the rebels destroy a planet-sized weapon and defeat a Darth Vader like character, would you have been excited about this movie?"BurtReynolds wrote:
What part of that did we not know going into this? That Rey was strong with the force?
Yeah, none of that kept anyone from being excited about seeing this movie.
Everything's perfectly all right now. We're fine. We're all fine here, now, thank you. How are you?

I doubt any generation's nostalgia and arrested development will be as thoroughly pandered to by the movie industry as mine.LoathedVermin72 wrote:People thinking art made for fan service is "not a bad thing" is a depressing expression of millennial entitlement. This is where we are now. You want to be coddled and pandered to. You enjoy being infantilized. You fuckers deserve this garbage.

I presume this will be the case for everything going forward - the double shelf life. We are just first. I suppose insofar as our stuff takes root we will have a larger footprint.
Given the way the Internet helped destroy common cultural touchstones in the name of individualized experience the reproduction of shared characters and broad stories helps replace some of what was lost.

The absence of a substantial collection of iconically shared characters and culture unique to them will be part of the upcoming generations' reduced ability to get sucked into this trashy trap. That, and expanding entertainment technologies that will probably change a lot of how we approach storytelling.stip wrote:I presume this will be the case for everything going forward - the double shelf life. Why don't the X wings blow up Kylos big ship with the fins and the troop transports at the battle on Maz's planet?
That's gonna bug me.
