I found a vox article on the force awakens to have some merit. I should definitely hate myself for this, but who should I hate more?

If all life on Earth died, the oxygen wouldn't disappear. It's because of aerobically respiring life that the oxygen depletion occurs. Hoth doesn't seem very colonised or abundant with animal life anyway.

However, SW folklore suggests that the sub-glacial ocean of Hoth is inhabited by microscopic creatures, including algae, which seem to be able to get enough sunlight from under the deep layer of ice to perform photosynthesis. Hoth's three moons generate a tidal pull which creates cracks on the ice, causing ocean water to invade the surface, where it is instantly frozen. This brings ocean algae and other microorganisms to the surface.

Plant life on Hoth appears to be restricted to algae and lichens. Still, the oxygen-based atmosphere of the planet seems to prove that large-scale photosynthesis must be occurring somewhere; or have occurred in the past. This, along with the presence of large, mammalianoid creatures like the Wampas, strongly suggests that Hoth was once a much warmer world, which later went through some sort of major catastrophe which turned it into a desolate ice ball.

Another theory says that Hoth may be simply passing through a temporary frozen stage, similar to the Snowball Earth hypothesis (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Snowball_E ... 1451993409).
