I'm a Bowie neophyte -- I actually just grabbed the 2CD "Best of Bowie" a week ago and am loving it. I have "Young Americans" and really only liked the lead track (though I absolutely love that song), so I held off on exploring his work further, but this hits collection is just incredible -- one irresistible song after another, many of which I've known for years without ever placing. I plan on going back to "Young Americans" once I've had my fill of the comp.

You couldn't have picked a worse album to start off with. "Young Americans" is by far his weakest album from the 70's and is still somewhere near the bottom on my all-time list.

Aye, agreed.
For that era, check out: The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars and Hunky Dory.
There's no single definitive album for Bowie. He has had so many eras and styles.
For his more recent albums, Reality is worth a few listens. Give it a chance, as it's a real grower. Heathen is pretty good too.
Then there's his 80's and 90's albums too. Best to take your time with this, or you'll overdose and won't get a chance to give each album a proper course of listening.

From touring perhaps. AFAIK he suffered a health scare (heart issue) during a concert about 10 years ago, so he's just making music when possible but not much else.
