Bowie - Blackstar (2016) & RIP David Bowie :(

Other than Pearl Jam, who else is there?

I can't believe it's taken me this long to give it a spin.

Today has been a great day for exploration. I've listened to three Bowie albums that I'd never heard before. It's been great to throw new stuff into the mix of stuff I already adore with all my heart.

Wait

I swear I've read durd talk about his love of Bowie numerous times in the past.

He's never heard Low? Maybe I was wrong?

I do adore Davie Bowie. He's one of my all time favorites.

And I'm not proud of it, but I've still not heard every one of his albums. This was the one that bothered me the most, so I figured I'd remedy it today. Glad I did. Doesn't change my embarrassment for having waited so long.

ive always enjoyed his music but never dug too deep. Which is super unfortunate. Sucks that it took his death to kick me in the pants and really seek out his non hit stuff.

Super pleased with the outcome of that at least.

When I saw Paul Westerberg cover Rebel, Rebel - I knew Bowie was someone i needed to dive into. Dipped my toes at various times over the years but his catalogue is just so vast. Overwhelming. Like Neil.

Been finding some really amazing gems today.

As of this evening I've heard:

David Bowie
Space Oddity
The Man Who Sold the World
Hunky Dory
Ziggy Stardust
Aladdin Sane
Diamond Dogs
Young Americans
Low *
Earthling
Hours
Heathen
The Next Day *
Blackstar *

So... 14 of 25.

I've also heard most of Heroes and Station to Station and some of Let's Dance and Scary Monsters (but none of those all the way through).

I haven't listened to all his stuff either. I guess Low just seems...maybe like loving the Stones, and having not gotten around to Goats Head Soup? It's not a record you expect to have been left for later.

Like I said before Bowie and Waits are similar to me in that I didn't want to devour their catalogs too quickly. Obviously, I caved and listened to all of Waits' studio albums faster than I thought I would. But I also, literally, ONLY listened to Tom Waits for about a year and a half straight.

Bowie,... I found so much worth, so much to go back to in the handful of albums that I had that I never kept going. Man Who Sold, Hunky Dory and Ziggy... these especially were tremendous albums for me. Huge in my growing up. I'm also way more versed in the non-album Bowie tracks than I am in Tom's non-album tracks. Especially the ones not on Orphans.

The two main rock stations here have been playing Bowie all day.

It's hard. Even non fans being upset I totally get it. You've had an important part of the fabric of your life torn out if you're a super fan down to losing something simple but powerful as a song you always loved of his as just a casual fan of music.
It's unfair and we all feel justifiably robbed. We've lost so many legends but perhaps none as important since maybe Lennon? I'm sure I'm forgetting a few. But on artistic and influential level I can't think of anyone whose reach and influence was so widespread

So many of the people I grew up with who also liked Bowie dismissed Low. So I never got into it. Obviously that was a mistake. Because this thing is brilliant.

Exactly how I feel. I can't think of anyone since Lennon that had this kind of reach and impact. I think what McP said earlier rings true. This isn't a tragedy like Lennon was. But it still hurts.

I'm glad we have the body of work we have and I'll continue to celebrate that. But this is a sad day none-the-less.
