You're probably right but I am one of the few who appreciate that it was at least a focussed effort. Not a bad album. Whereas LB is all over the place with little inspiration. Half the album was throwaway.

Re: Backspacer: Official Album Thread
I find myself enjoying Backspacer much more then I did a few years ago. A lot of that can be attributed to how much Amongst the Waves has grown on me over the years. It feels like a lynchpin song right in the middle of the album. Every album has that one key song that I just can't get down with and sometimes it takes a few years for it to click but once it does it seems to unlock the rest of the album for me. At least that's been the case ever since Yield.
Yield - In Hiding (somehow I actually used to hate this song, now it's one of my favorites)
Binaural - Light Years (same goes with this one)
Riot Act - I Am Mine (the live version over the years has really changed my attitude toward this one)
Pearl Jam - ? (I'm still holding out hope that Gone will just click for me someday)
Backspacer - Amongst the Waves (not sure what it is, maybe it's just the bridge that I love so much)
Lightning Bolt - ? (too soon to tell but Getaway is the only one that I really have a hard time listening to)

Seriously?
I reckon getaway is one of the better songs on LB.
It's ip there with the best album openers for me.

There's just something about that weak opening guitar riff that just kills it for me. Once the song gets rolling it's pretty good but I think I would probably like it much better if it wasn't the opener.dimejinky99 wrote:Seriously?

It makes me wonder if they got the whole PJ 2.0 out of their system now. Perhaps PJ 3.0 will provide some new surprises.

It's just under last exit but it's far better than brain of j. Which only really has the small bridge going for it.cutuphalfdead wrote:you really think getaway is on par with go or last exit or brain of j?

Re: Backspacer: Official Album Thread
I'd probably appreciate Backspacer more if it hadn't taken them 3+ years to release it after S/T, and then another 4 years for Lightning Bolt - which really didn't tread any new ground. It really seemed like an album that should've been quickly followed up with something a bit more provactive.

Fair point. It's why tool failed to do themselves out of their 10k days hole.
Around the sun is a great example of a record that really disappointed me whose subtle and minor charms really started to reveal themselves once two additional records followed within a few years and it no longer had to answer to my REM ideal. Not a great record by any stretch, but one who can find space for itself in the larger catalog

Of course it probably helps that I think collapse into now and especially accelerate are really good/great records - it helps wipe the slate clean, so that electron blue does not have to be try not to breathe.

I reckon a lot of people will like it for what it is once they've gone back and listened to it again.
