I was lucky enough to see Bowie, in Philadelphia on the "Outside" tour in 1997. The opening act cancelled so there was a long wait. Bowie completely surprised the audience by strolling out on stage with his acoustic guitar when the house lights were still on and the PA music was still playing. He then played "Quicksand" acoustic, with the band joining in towards the end. When he sang the line, "I'm not a prophet or a stone age man, just a mortal with potential of a superman, I'm living on" he grinned widely and the crowd went apeshit! I haven't been able to find video of it...only the next evening at the same venue when he made a "normal" entrance. It's gotta be out there somewhere! It was general admission, so you bet your ass I was front and center! He was 10 feet away, close enough for me to see his different colored eyes. He smiled at me several times, as if he was amused by the dumbstruck look on my face. I drove home feeling like I was very lucky. Another piece of my childhood, gone.

I have severe regrets about missing his last stop in Portland, 2004. Had a chance for tickets & passed. That turned out to be my one & only opportunity.

Speaking strictly from a standpoint of character perception, I don't believe that a person's poor decisions from their 20's should necessarily follow them into their 60's. I don't care for any thought process which refuses people the opportunity to grow away from their mistakes. David Bowie may have spent the '70's as a coke-addled, groupie-shagging creep but that doesn't mean he didn't die a goodhearted, ethical man. I have no real evidence either way, mind you, but I'm not interested in projecting my own feelings onto the situation and risking making faulty assumptions about it, especially since the woman -- even speaking as an adult herself -- not only seems to harbor no ill feelings towards Bowie but actually seems to look back on that time in her life with an element of pride (read the "Thrillist" article where she talks about it). I definitely don't think Bowie's actions were right, regardless of the "times," but at some point my 40-years-too-late objections cease to have any real meaning.

Granted, from a legal standpoint, things are different. If laws exist for victims to prosecute offenders for decades-old offenses, then that's reality. But the charges aren't mine to file.

I'm not condoning whatever activities allegedly occurred. But a person doesn't necessarily need to be imprisoned in order to regret prior life choices, become a rehabilitated, and become a better person.

Either way, I fucking hate it when people dredge up shit from someone's early life after they die. You had many years to bring it up, it's too late now.

For the record, i'm into bubble butts and crow's feet, something sorely lacking in the 15 year old demo, so don't go calling me a pedo. That's why I'm better than David Bowie.
