Bowie - Blackstar (2016) & RIP David Bowie :(

David Bowie was one of the band's earliest supporters and champions. He not only created the world that made it possible for our band to exist, he welcomed us into it with grace and warmth. We will take to the grave the moments we shared; talking, playing music and collaborating as some of the most profound and memorable moments of our lives. A true artist even in his passing, the world is more bright and mysterious because of him, and we will continue to shout prayers into the atmosphere he created.

Speaking strictly from a standpoint of character perception, I don't believe that a person's poor decisions from their 20's should necessarily follow them into their 60's. I don't care for any thought process which refuses people the opportunity to grow away from their mistakes. David Bowie may have spent the '70's as a coke-addled, groupie-shagging creep but that doesn't mean he didn't die a goodhearted, ethical man. I have no real evidence either way, mind you, but I'm not interested in projecting my own feelings onto the situation and risking making faulty assumptions about it, especially since the woman -- even speaking as an adult herself -- not only seems to harbor no ill feelings towards Bowie but actually seems to look back on that time in her life with an element of pride (read the "Thrillist" article where she talks about it). I definitely don't think Bowie's actions were right, regardless of the "times," but at some point my 40-years-too-late objections cease to have any real meaning.

Granted, from a legal standpoint, things are different. If laws exist for victims to prosecute offenders for decades-old offenses, then that's reality. But the charges aren't mine to file.

My spin of Hunky Dory tonight has been very emotional. Definitely some sadness, but mostly peaceful happiness over the fact that I was alive at the same time as this amazing artist.

For me it's certainly a top-5 album of the 70's.

Hunky Dory is just sooo good.

Lots of awesome shit came about in 1971, not least of which was me.

There's something else to add. The only story around is the Maddox one. She revealed it in bragging tones years later as part of a project that celebrated the groupie culture of the time after the other woman who was there that night changed her mind about taking part in it. Apparently Maddox embellished the story reversing the roles of the girls, the other who by that account slept with Bowie was around 16 (so was Cher when she met 27 year old Sonny) which could have even been within the age of consent laws and Bowie was in his early 20s.

And again for context the reactions from the then underage girls to the Runaways rape story was almost as if they resent Jackie Fox for going public with it because she ruined their romanticized perception about taking part of the "life style", that didn't just feature sleeping with under age children, but drugging and raping them in a room full of people, as something to be proud of.

I said earlier that Bowie's work has never 100% connected for me but to be honest I may have just been worn down by the early 70s records (Hunky Dory, Ziggy, Aladdin Sane, Diamond Dogs, etc.) which I've tried unsuccessfully many times to get bowled over by. Having to endure so many dull baby boomer talking heads yammering on about how Ziggy enlivened a dreary, grey Britain certainly doesn't help either - give me fucking strength.

I need to give the Eno/Fripp era records another shot as I'm a much bigger fan of those guys' work and it's been a long time since I've heard Low or anything else from that period.

Listening to the "Best of Bowie" compilation, it's the material from about 1976-1983 that strikes me most. The "Ziggy Stardust" stuff doesn't hit me as hard. I mean, it's okay, but I really like "TVC15," "Sound and Vision," "Ashes to Ashes" -- stuff like that.
