Californication and By the Way are a fantastic 1-2 punch listening experience.

"By the Way" is my favorite RHCP album as well. I haven't listened to anything they've done since, though.

Also, Throw Away Your Television is great fun. Similar to I Like Dirt off Californication, this is one of those little 3-minute RHCP songs that is so fun when they pull it off right.
"Throw Away Your Television" is an immaculately arranged song -- I love how Frusciante plays a new guitar part each time they come back around to the "It's a repeat..." refrain. That attention to detail in arrangement is present in a lot of places on "BTW" -- one of the things that causes it to rate a notch above their other albums, in my opinion...

I'm quite sceptical of the received wisdom that RHCP are a terrible live band. If the Live at Hyde Park album is indicative, they sound pretty incredible to me. I regret not seeing them when I had the chance, I worked at a t-shirt stall at the 2000 Big Day Out when they headlined but left at the end of my shift instead of sticking around to watch their set.

I am down with RHCP, particularly BSSM. This one is sounding great to me right now:

Big fan of this one from the later period:

I have always found Kiedis to be an extremely poor singer live. But I've seen them twice and found that the energy and musical performance of the band overshadowed the technical aspects of his singing, in person anyway -- recorded performances don't hold up as well, in my opinion.

I love the peppers. I love their music, their history...the crazy aspects of whatever they did in the 80s and 90s. Their music input after Californication...not so much. By the way is ok, but i cant really get into SA...I do like a few songs from Im with you though...

And live, i saw them 4 times and only the first one was amazing.

tragabigzanda wrote:I guess I should clarify that I've only seen RHCP live once. But it was atrocious -- easily the second-worst concert I've ever seen by a big act, after the Meat Puppets.

Kiedis did indeed sound awful, but also the mix was garbage. Chad and Flea were all mud, and the only thing that stood out was John -- both his guitar and singing sounded great. I've seen/listened to a handful of bootlegs and official live things, and nothing has really changed my mind, save for that one Lollapalooza gig where they had light bulbs on their heads. They sounded good on that.

Chili Peppers are one of the handful of bands that have been around forever and have a lot of material out there. Some of it I really like but there's also a bunch I'm indifferent towards.
Got to give them props for staying mainstream relevant though; while I'm with You did just okay Stadium Arcadium was just as popular among the radio crowd as Blood Sugar Sex Magic was 14 years earlier.

This thread prompted me to buy the Melbourne 2000 RHCP show available on Nugs/LiveDownloads.

So far, so good. Frusciante is doing some fantastic stuff on this.

I saw RHCP live in 2003 with Qotsa and The Mars Volta. It was a pretty kick ass show.
