So here's a nice dead season discussion: ESPN is ranking the top 20 coaches of all time, and here's their 6-20 list thus far:

6 Brown
7 Belichick
8 Landry
9 Gibbs
10 Lambeau
11 Parcells
12 Madden
13 Johnson
14 Coughlin
15 Grant
16 Stram
17 Levy
18 Gillman
19 Shanahan
20 Dungy

I'm assuming that the top five (in some order) are Walsh, Lombardi, Halas, Noll, and Shula.

Other than Jimmy Johnson being waaaaay too high (as in, he shouldn't be on this list), I can't argue too much with it. I wish I could move Shanny higher up the list, but other than Johnson I just can't justify it. The good news is that everyone above him other than Belichick and Johnson are in the Hall of Fame, so he should still have a good chance. If the Broncos can't win a Super Bowl soon, I sure won't mind if the Redskins win instead.

Sure they don't want to put Jim Harbaugh in there? ;) I'm guessing they are forgiving Gibbs for whatever that was in the comeback.

Well right now his brother's got the edge over him.

As for Gibbs's comeback, it's actually quite impressive that he was able to make the playoffs twice given how badly Cerrato and Snyder were managing that team.

Exactly. As well as keeping the team together and rallying them after Sean Taylor's death.

Slight change of subject, since we agree on the above. Before I hit the road for a couple of hours, I'm going to put you on the spot: Do you think the Redskins should change their name?

No. For me, I've never even associated anything with it other than a football team. Yeah, I see the logo and know it's in reference to Native Americans, but I've never once thought of it as derogatory / racist. I guess now that everyone (the WAPO every day) seems to talk about it all the time, I reckon it's inevitable that it will change. It's hard to even gauge how many Native Americans are offended. Sometimes I wonder if it's just white people who think they should be offended? It seems like every time I see a group against, another comes out and says they basically don't give a shit. Some say they are "honored", but I don't know if that is the Redskins/NFL hype machine at work.

I'm gonna keep wearing my Redskins gear, and say the name.

I've long been in the "I don't really care that much" category. If I were a Redskins fan I'd likely have an opinion. However, I do have to give Michael Tomasky credit for making me really think about it:

http://www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2 ... skins.html

I'm a big believer in intent when it comes to discriminatory perception (there was a thread on the archived board I started that dealt with blackface regarding that belief), and it's clear that Dan Snyder and the overwhelming majority of Redskins fans have a positive intent. However, the intent of George Preston Marshall, the man who gave the Redskins their name, was quite clear, and it's not a pretty one, either. :|

For now, I'm on the I don't have a problem with it side.

That article is interesting, but I'm pretty sure if you polled Native Americans, they would say they have bigger issues to worry about (like poverty). I don't say "Redskins" or mean it as racism in any way whatsoever. The guy that started the team was a dick so it seems, but he's dead. This team is something entirely different now (as is the NFL). Most people don't care about the name, some do, and it seems those that do keep making an issue of it. That's what I mean when I say I think it's just white people who think they should be offended.

Also, meanings of words can change. If "redskin" was initially racist, it's now known as a NFL team. Gay was happy, fag was cigarette.

Having said that, I wouldn't be surprised to see the name change at some point.

The only way I see it changing in at least our lifetime is if they get their trademark stripped. Then Snyder won't be able to make money off of merchandise.

This really isn't how the court system works in Illinois as I am confused as to why there is no sentencing hearing scheduled and Ocho Stanko apparently went straight to jail, but good job anyway, Florida  .

The pats make perfect sense, i really think if he is ever going to become a pro qb then it will be from learning behind Brady for the next 3 or 4 years and by being coached by mcdaniels

Brady's advice:

1) know obscure rules
2) win super bowls
3) knock-up an actress
4) marry a model
5) look fabulous
6) build a mansion with a MOAT!

I disagree with how that went down. That judge had a major stick up her butt, and clearly wasn't aware that that was a common thing in football.

No way. Your're obligated to behave a certain way in the court room.....and that doesn't even take into account the fact he appeared in court on the VOP for not reporting in the first place. He got his, in my opinion.
