What movies are you watching?

Whenever there's active promotion on the part of somebody else, whenever I see somebody all dolled up for a fancy photograph and someone's handing out flyers or whenever there's active promotion for something like that, as an imposition on my day, I hate all those people and I want them to fail. I have a visceral reaction to advertising and promotion. There's just something about salesmanship that grates on me on a very base level and I react very negatively towards it. I want those people to suffer and I want their enterprises to fail.

The Hateful Eight.

I hated Django, and had low expectations going in to this. But I was surprised at how much I enjoyed the first 2/3. Some of the funniest dialogue I've seen on screen in a while ("I am guilty -- I do take a laissez faire attitude with the hats"); Morricone's score is great; and there are some killer performances from Tim Roth, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Bruce Dern, Kurt Russell, Sam Jackson, and Demian Bichir.

But once the violence started, the film started sucking almost immediately. Over-the-top gratuity that wasn't earned after 2+ hours of one-dimensional characters saying "nigger" and "bitch" a lot. Totally soulless.

I agree with your critique about the final 2 acts being totally meaningless, but while the first 3 acts kept my attention, I can't say they were exceptional in any way.

I watched The End of the Tour this morning and I'm wracking my brain trying to figure out what this movie is for--if that makes sense. I guess I mean more like "whom" it's for. If you're a fan of David Foster Wallace's work, I guess it's a sort of wish fulfillment to get to see Wallace as the "regular dude genius" that you imagine him as when you're reading, and the movie goes out of its way to portray him that way (Segal does have Wallace's cadence and some of his mannerisms down to a point, if that's what you're looking for). For me, this rang hollow, as my interest in Wallace has shifted and changed over the years, and I'm much more interested in his creative process and influences than in him personally--and there's plenty of that in Lipsky's book, but barely any of it on the screen. And if the movie is for people who might be interested in Wallace's work, there's so very little about his texts in here, then how could that work?

There's also the very troubling aspect of his suicide, as the film apparently tries to paint Lipsky as having a special window into why he did it. That's fucked up.

Really anxious to see this, just haven't found the time yet. I'm a little confused by your comment re: his suicide, only because I heard an interview w/Segal on NPR in which he said he deliberately played the character as if there's no knowledge about how he died -- so I got the impression there was no mention of his suicide in the film.

Jeez, I woulda spoiler-alerted that if the film hadn't come out last year. Sorry!

A doco about the Tim Burton/Nicolas Cage version of Superman, which never got made.


This sounds like a dry boring fanboi wankfest. It's really not. It's a fascinating and frankly scary glimpse into the Hollywood producer system and the pitfalls.

If you have any interest in production design and art direction then watch this.
Or even if you're a fan of sci fi and comic books.

Watched Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind tonight, and it was good, but not amongst my favorites. I can understand why it's so lauded, though, especially with the visuals.
