How Heroes was written explained by Visconti with the help of the original multi-track stems.
I've read about this before, so it's a real pleasure to watch the whole process laid out like that - thanks so much for posting it
that guy's pretty impressed with himself, huh?
seeing how it's tony visconti, i'd say he has good reason.

he was doing this in 1977, what were you doing? oh, right, not existing yet. 8-)
When I was studying audio engineering we spent a class talking about this session. I love this song and the production.
I find these kinds of things really interesting to read or in these case watch and listen.
This kind of approach in particular when everything is subordinated to the sound they were going for even the actual writing. So many rock tunes de-constructed and explained like that would be reduced to an isolated, famous riff, iconic solo, bass line and vocal and it would be explained how they were squeezed together seasoned with just enough reverb and compression to make them stick together into a song, and that would be about it probably.

I'm fascinated by the use of stuff like the cheesy synths here that are used subtly just to add some colour to the mix.
Yeah this was fucking cool. After watching that, all I hear in my head are the backing vocals. "I reme-e-mb-uh."
:haha: That stuck in my head too especially because he talks about their accents before playing it.

The most I can say is that Ziggy Stardust and Scary Monsters are probably my two favorites.

...Probably.

Hunky Dory is my go-to favorite. I'm always in the mood for that album. But I'm not gonna sit here and tell anyone that it's better than Ziggy or Scary Monsters or Low or Aladdin Sane or Blackstar.

HD is up there too. "Life on Mars?", "Queen Bitch", and "The Bewlay Brothers" are some of his...no, some of THE best songs ever.

When asked what my all time favorite song is... Life on Mars? always leaps to mind. It's among only three or four songs that always come to mind in that conversation and it's been that way since I first heard it.

I'd put it in that group too.

Dunno if this was posted yet, but the Bowie Songs blog did an album poll of about 350 hardcore fans and came up with:

https://bowiesongs.wordpress.com/2016/0 ... ay-3-10-1/

10. Lodger
9. Outside
8. Diamond Dogs
7. Aladdin Sane
6. Scary Monsters
5. Heroes
4. Ziggy Stardust
3. Hunky Dory
2. Station to Station
1. Low

For me, Station to Station has always been the clear-cut #1, with about four others duking it out for second place.

STS has always been his most overrated for me. But that said, "Golden Years" is his best song.
