Pretty cool interview with Kim in the Breat Easton Ellis podcast.

I love Bret insight in SY in the 80s and 90s... its a reminder on how cool the band was.

Not a fan of Nevermind but those three other tunes are all excellent.

I wonder if you're able to get many songs from EJST&NS? I know there's little out there because they didn't really tour behind that album due to Kim's pregnancy. It's always frustrated me how I only ever see Bull in the Heather and Androgynous Mind in the subsequent setlists.
They actually rarely played "Androgynous Mind" live. But the Washing Machine tour was also by extension the EJST&NS tour, and they played 3-4 songs from EJST&NS at every show on the 1995 / 1996 tour. They also debuted a lot of EJST&NS material live on the summer 1993 tour, so there's live versions of pretty much every song from that album.

You'll find the following songs on my set, all from live recordings:
* Bull in the Heather
* Starfield Road
* Skink
* Self-Obsessed and Sexxee
* In the Mind of the Bourgeois Reader

If I can find a way to get Waist in there I'm going to do it. I absolutely freaking love that song.

The challenge of this set is that Sonic Youth typically toured their current album heavily, and relied mostly on their current album when playing shows. Other than the 1990 - 1996 era and the 2002 - 2005 era, their touring consisted of playing almost every song off their current album live and then sprinkling in the handful of old songs they felt like playing. When they would finish a tour supporting an album, almost all of those songs would drop off the setlist forever. What this means is that I have a limited pool of shows and songs to choose from for a lot of albums.

So what that means is that every disc (7 is what I'm shooting for) will have like 4 - 5 songs from 2 different albums (so for example, 1990 - 1993 covers the Goo and Dirty eras, with like 5 songs from each) and then some choice live cuts of older songs. There are almost no demos on the set because band demos never leaked. It's mostly live material.

This is bootleg - there are no live versions or demos of the song out there. So no, unless something pops up in the next couple weeks it won't make it.

How do you feel about looking back on your time with Sonic Youth, given the turmoil and now the distance? What are your feelings about that final show in Sao Paulo?

Well I never thought of it as the final show! In my mind we were going to take a break as things got worked out in our personal worlds. I find it really strange that I get demonised for the break-up of Sonic Youth when I myself had no intention of breaking up the band; that was a real surprise to me. I get the reasons behind the band not existing at the moment - everyone has to be on the same page - but there was never any announcement. Well, I never made one.

Sonic Youth was a bond that existed between four of us. I have a tattoo that says ‘SONIC LIFE’ and it’s something that defines me forever. For me, it goes on and won’t end. I write songs now and people say “It sounds kinda like Sonic Youth” - well, that’s my vocabulary, you know. What you’re not hearing is Lee and Kim because they’re not playing the music with me, so it’s a different situation.

With the new music, there will never be a democracy like Sonic Youth. I certainly allow musicians that I work with to do what they do, but I do make the final decision on how things are going to sound. Sonic Youth was not that way - it was 8 hands. The band will be forever with me; the fact that we’re not playing at the moment comes down to what happened in our personal lives.

Have there been any rumblings in SY-land about a follow up to the "Smart Bar" album?

No. They can't get much of anything together right now.

Fucking Thurston. Regardless of what may have lead to his infidelity -- I won't just accept that he was 100% at fault -- surely he knew that his scorned ex wouldn't be too interested in carrying on musically with him. His whole attitude since the split has been really smug, like:

What would you expect him to do? He's always been like this. That's who he is.

Frankly, the most disappointing thing about this whole situation is how public it became. I really never wanted to know about any of this stuff and I'm sure just about everybody who loves Sonic Youth agrees with me.
