Re: Tom Waits
I liked that Letterman song for what it was. And I imagine that's all it was.

Bad As Me has some songs I love so very much. Pay Me and Back In The Crow are my two favorites. I think the album is great.

Re: Tom Waits
"Bad as Me" suffered a bit from "Backspacer" syndrome, I think -- it would have been an easier record to appreciate had it come out as a sort of low profile album amidst a flurry of creative activity, but as the sole product to stand for seven years of inactivity (barring "Orphans"), it was destined to underwhelm. I like it though. I should listen to it again soon.

so the river will not drown it
and the highway won't take it
and the dust will not cover it
and the sun won't blind it
and the wind won't blow it away

Re: Tom Waits
Well, we stick our fingers in the ground,
heave and turn the world around
Smoke is blacking out the sun
At night I pray and clean my gun
The cracked bell rings as the ghost bird sings
and the gods go begging here
So just open fire when you hit the shore
All is fair in love and war
Hoist that rag!
heave and turn the world around
Smoke is blacking out the sun
At night I pray and clean my gun
The cracked bell rings as the ghost bird sings
and the gods go begging here
So just open fire when you hit the shore
All is fair in love and war
Hoist that rag!

Hoist is probably my favorite protest song of all time. And when you think of everything that encompasses the story of the Middle East in the first part of this century, "gods go begging here" says so much in just a single line.

Probably because that line about knowing what to do when the baby cries puts undue expectation on the couple.

The Mule, Bone Machine, and Real Gone are the only records I know that make me feel like I don't drink as much as I should.
When my kids turn on the Walking Dead, I listen to them through headphones and it keeps me from laughing.

Tell me how does God choose/whose prayers does he refuse
Quite a few great God in the Middle East lyrics in that period

Right. "The smell of blood, the drone of flies/You know what to do if the baby cries."
It's like you're barely even married and here's fucking Tom Waits trying to pressure you into having kids already, and doind a piss poor job might I add with all his talk about blood and flies.
