the end of that verse is ridiculously gooddurdencommatyler wrote:The barn leaned over

It's hard to tell in this light

drag your wagon and your plow over the bones of the dead
out among the roses and the weeds
you can never go back
and the answer is no
and wishing for it only makes it bleed

and the answer is no

Studio version, yes. Live versions are comedy gold, though.

Re: Tom Waits
Like SO good. Knocked the wind right out of me the first time I actually listened to what he was saying. I think I actually literally gasped with the last of the breath I had. And I was in public, man. Sucker punched in Brooklyn. Goddamn.stip wrote:the end of that verse is ridiculously gooddurdencommatyler wrote:The barn leaned over

Re: Tom Waits
Yeah, I've never heard it live. I'm not big on Waits live. Yet. I'm working on it. But ... with the striking exception of an old live cut of Heartattack and Vine, I much prefer his studio stuff. His possessed carnival barker thing is awesome. But he often loses the melodies that I love so much.Kevin Davis wrote:durdencommatyler wrote:That one's freaky as shit, too.LoathedVermin72 wrote:"What's He Building in There?" freaks me out a lot more.

You won't lose any melody on "What's He Building?" -- he just ad-libs extra stuff that deflates the spooky vibe of the piece and turns it into more of a comedy routine. It sounds dumb, but when you're swept up in his personality, it's golden.

Re: Tom Waits
WHB? has always walked a fine line with me as far as that goes. He masterfully stays of the creepy terrorist holy shit side of the thing in studio, but it's not hard for me to imagine it tipping the other way.Kevin Davis wrote:You won't lose any melody on "What's He Building?" -- he just ad-libs extra stuff that deflates the spooky vibe of the piece and turns it into more of a comedy routine. Well, they removed it, but it was from God Don't Never Change: The Songs of Blind Willie Johnson, a Blind Willy Johnson tribute album funded via Kickstarter and due out later this month. https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/bl ... ie-johnson

there is probably no way I would have made it through that song if it wasn't tom waits. What is it about that man?

I'm not sure. Because I can't really relate to your first sentence.stip wrote:there is probably no way I would have made it through that song if it wasn't tom waits. What is it about that man?

But, yeah, I could listen to Tom Waits perform just about anything. He's really got some kind of wicked magic.

there's just something about him that makes me automatically check every preconceived idea about what music should sound like or what I will enjoy at the door.
