I thought 300 and Watchmen were good. Sucker Punch was bad but the visuals were nice.turned2black wrote:I was willing to overlook the Seth MacFarlane thing, but this is really pushing it.durdencommatyler wrote:Listen, t2br2d, I've seen exactly ONE Zack Synder picture and I liked it. Haven't all his films, with the exception of 300, been crushing box-office bombs? Of course this doesn't say anything about the quality of his work, it's just surprising that he continues to helm projects of this scope.

i thought Dawn of the Dead and Watchmen did alright, but I cant remember. but 300 was pretty huge. He could probably endure one more Suckerpunch.

I remember Watchmen being a bit of a flop. And yeah, I'd completely forgotten about Dawn of the Dead.

Yeah, I think Watchmen made money. It wasn't a flop in that sense. But I think everyone had higher expectations.

From what I'm reading, it didn't break even in its theatrical run. That's without factoring in prints and marketing costs, or home media revenue. I reckon it's still probably in the red.

The marketing push for "Watchmen" was freaking huge, there is no way that movie broke even once you factor it in.

According to wikipedia:
Budget $130 million
Box office $185,258,983
That's all I was going on. But, yeah, you could be right. Either way, I liked it and that's all I care about.

Re: Movie: Man Of Steel (06-14-13)
You're right, that is all that matters. The problem with those numbers is that it only includes the production budget, without taking P&M costs (which are HUGE for a movie of this size). Add to that the fact that the box-office numbers don't translate to how much revenue the studio received (about 60% of domestic box-office, while exhibitors and distributors keep 40ish%) and that it's factoring in international box-office (it only made slightly over 100mil domestically-- international box-office returns even less money to the studio, usually around 15%). So the numbers are deceptive.
Still, it's an R-Rated movie, it's over two and a half hours long, it features a rape scene... it's remarkable that it even made that much.

Re: Movie: Man Of Steel (06-14-13)
I read that Man of Steel has already made 170 mil in product placement and promotional support. And the thing isn't even out yet. I'm not sure what all of that means exactly, but any idea what Watchmen made in product placement and promotional support? Is that factored into the numbers and percentages you posted?

Serious question: When is this run on comic book/superhero movies gonna end? Is this gonna last generations? Are all of these characters gonna be like Bond now and keep going and going?

Re: Movie: Man Of Steel (06-14-13)
Honestly, I don't know anything about that, but I really can't see how it'd approach anything like that number. Watchmen isn't a Superman movie. It doesn't have the built-in mass appeal or kid-friendliness. Man of Steel has nearly 100 promotional partners going all-in, which is why it's getting talked about. Raising over $100 million on promotional support is pretty much unheard-of.durdencommatyler wrote:I read that Man of Steel has already made 170 mil in product placement and promotional support. Watchmen had a production budget of $130 million and a marketing budget of around $50 million. According to IMDB, it made around $108 million domestically. 60% of that goes to the studio-- that's $64.8 million. Let's say $65 million. It made an additional $78 million internationally. Let's say the studio gets 30% of that money (best case scenario). That's $23.4 million-- let's say 24. That takes care of the revenue from the theatrical run. Let's also say, all in all, that it made $40 million on home video and I'm gonna say $20 million on licensing (I'm pulling this one out of my ass, but I think it's a very generous number for a movie like Watchmen). That's $149 million dollars. Against the $180 million dollar production and marketing costs, it's still in the red. And if a film takes over four years to generate profit, I think it's fair to call it a flop.

I read somewhere that they have also spent 150 mil in marketing. This will be a huge money maker though.Mecca wrote:not seeing any numbers, but there are some good sized companies listed heredurdencommatyler wrote:I read that Man of Steel has already made 170 mil in product placement and promotional support.
