Re: 11th album rumors and speculation
I rarely listen to the bootlegs. Even the best bootlegs usually pale in comparison to an average show. for me the experience is so closely tied to being there that the bootlegs will always be lacking.
A great performance here and there is different, and there are songs I think sound better live than on the studio, but that's not the same thing as sitting down and listening to a performance from start to finish.

I've only seen Pearl Jam three times, twice in 2009 and once in 2013. I'm pretty sure I can say I've had experiences listening to bootlegs that are more significant to me than any of these three shows.

Re: 11th album rumors and speculation
So, Paul Westerberg just released a new album but it sounds like he basically got together with Juliana Hatfield to kind of finish off songs he's already written over the years. Kind of clean the basement out a bit. Im not sure how many songs were actually "new" or recently written, nor how finished the "older" demo's actually were.
But, it got me thinking. If PJ did something like this and they put out a great album, would that sit right with us? Or would it be "well, they are older songs so rip pj".

I can guarantee the reaction around here would be the latter.Strat wrote:But, it got me thinking. If PJ did something like this and they put out a great album, would that sit right with us? Or would it be "well, they are older songs so rip pj".
But if the songs were great, I'd say the ends justify the means.

Re: 11th album rumors and speculation
I'd be happy with a batch of some great new songs but it wouldn't make me feel any more hopeful for future albums

Even if the songs were good they would be modern recordings of them so Ed's over annunciation of every fucking syllable would ruin it.

Re: 11th album rumors and speculation
I think if there are a handful of "old" songs on there, it's all good. If they have had some songs in the wings for a couple of albums that they just couldn't figure out and suddenly they clicked, then by all means

C'mon spenno, you know that everyone at RM feels exactly the same and we're all just a bunch of contrarians cut from exactly the same cloth.Birds in Hell wrote:I don't know, there's a pretty wide range of viewpoints here.evenslow wrote:I can guarantee the reaction around here would be the latter.Strat wrote:But, it got me thinking. Re: 11th album rumors and speculation
It would depend on a lot of things. I can imagine today's PJ taking a song like Dead Man and ruining it in the process of "getting it ready" to release. But even if they didn't fuck it up, it would definitely come down to Ed. I'm so uninterested with him as a vocalist right now, he'd have to completely change his approach and get back to something like basics to avoid laying all over everything like a wet blanket.

Re: 11th album rumors and speculation
Imagine how sick "Lost Dogs" would have been if it were a compact 14-song album, and not padded with so much nonsense, much like The Rolling Stones' "Tattoo You", which was a time-filler album of old outtakes presented as "new" material that fooled a lot of people. One of those songs was "Start Me Up".

This is what van halen did with their last album. It was way better than it should have been as a result.Strat wrote:So, Paul Westerberg just released a new album but it sounds like he basically got together with Juliana Hatfield to kind of finish off songs he's already written over the years. Re: 11th album rumors and speculation
I'd be totally fine with PJ revisiting some unreleased/unfinished songs and polishing them up and releasing them as new material. As long as the songs are good who gives a shit.
