Re: Pearl Jam (self titled): Official Album Thread
i think how much yield is 'loved' on this board may have more to do with the median age of the board's median posting member
yield probably falling right in the sweet spot somewhere of the having disposable income / ability to actually see PJ on tour on one's space-time-youth-continuum
given that the 96 tour was tiny
and a bunch of people here may have been too young to have seen them prior to 96
and in 98 they did a pre-riot act popularity grab so there were a lot of opportunities for people in high school/college to actually see them play
and Matt Cameron was in good form with them then
and there was no need to bring Dave A back
which has since changed

I really don't think so.96583UP wrote:i think how much yield is 'loved' on this board may have more to do with the median age of the board's median posting member

Re: Pearl Jam (self titled): Official Album Thread
I do...the love for Yield, in comparison with the 1993-1996 run of Vs-Vitalogy-No Code, is way out of whack here on RM. I was fortunate enough to see all three of these tours, too, all of which destroyed the 1998 tour. 1994 was the band's live and creative peak...Leatherhead wrote:I really don't think so.96583UP wrote:i think how much yield is 'loved' on this board may have more to do with the median age of the board's median posting member

I think their best album is Yield, and I didn't see the band live until 2005. I didn't become a fan until 2001, and was initially sucked in by Ten at that time.

I think Binaural is their best album, with Yield definitely in the top 4, and I didn't see the band live until 2009. Didn't become a fan until 2006, when Pearl Jam came out. And was also sucked in by Ten, albeit along with Pearl Jam and Rearviewmirror.LikeLukin wrote:I think their best album is Yield, and I didn't see the band live until 2005. Binaural is easily their best album. Ever. And I saw PJ in 95. Their creative peak was not 94. They were only touching the surface. No Code through Binaural is sublime. The 2000 shows were a culmination of all of the tours combined. Focused. Emotional. Tight. Songs that held up and setlists that could go on for miles to back up the top tier era of PJ.

Listened to this one yesterday after a while, and yeah i love it. The production, of maybe the mix, sucks. But i really enjoyed how into it the band is, and most of the songs too...i dont think there is a song from here that i actually dont like.

Re: Pearl Jam (self titled): Official Album Thread
Stip was definitely right that there would be some revision in people's opinions vis-a-vis this album after several years of having Backspacer and Lightning Bolt kicking around.
I still don't like the overall product. The same songs I've always liked (mainly "Parachutes," "Marker," and "Unemployable") are still my favorites. I don't think I could ever come around the way that others have to this record. But then again, my favorite Pearl Jam material, even early on, was always the more subdued, moodier, or outright unconventional stuff.

time just makes it easier to appreciate and evaluate an album on its own terms (and find stuff to enjoy) since it no longer is answerable to the listeners preexisting expectations and demands

thing is, S/T grew on me and I love it now. But after the same amount of time it took me to like S/T, I still hate Backspacer as much if not more.stip wrote:time just makes it easier to appreciate and evaluate an album on its own terms (and find stuff to enjoy) since it no longer is answerable to the listeners preexisting expectations and demands

Marker, Parachutes, and Army Reserve still rank up with my favorite PJ tunes.
I wouldn't be too upset if I never heard the rest of the album again.
