"Off He Goes," easily. I realize that the lyrical premise of Eddie singing a third person cautionary tale to himself is overly precious, but somehow that still strikes me as less objectionable to the three minutes of hoots and grunts and other assorted vocalized pauses that comprise the final three minutes of "Jeremy." Plus Mike's guitar tones on the studio recording are off the chain.

This was a tough choice. I've written elsewhere about older songs--especially "anthems" and sing-alongs--losing their power over the years; Even Flow and Alive definitely fall into the former category, and Small Town and (sometimes) Betterman into the second. Jeremy is a weird song that had sort of become a "Not this shit again" song for a while, but I feel like I went so long without actively listening to it that it's regained some of its raw power, which is still there, especially in good live performances. It's tough to vote over Off He Goes, but I'm gonna do it.

Jeremy wins this one, still one of the band's finest songs for me.

They don't make 'em like that anymore.

This would be a tough one, if only Matt didn't play way too hard on Off He Goes...

But he does. He kills the fragility of that song. So Jeremy it is.

Jeremy is one of the few Ten songs that I'm not sick of hearing for some reason. Maybe it's because they don't play it to death live. But still, whenever I hear Off He Goes.... anywhere, on the shitter, at work, on the couch dreaming of asking my wife to have sex with me... it immediately conjures up beautiful images of No Code polaroids. Anything that reminds me of No Code polaroids is a winner.

So don't listen to his butchering of it. Go listen to how it was meant to be played.

I like all 3 of these. Wish one or two of them could face off in one of the other shitty 1B matches.

Anyway, Jeremy is a tour de fucking force, so it gets my vote.

This really shouldn't even be that close. Off He Goes is widely considered a top 5 Pearl Jam song by almost everyone.
