Frank Fairfield curates another reissue of 78 rpm records – this time with the help of a few of his collector friends. The collection focuses on some of the most seldom acknowledged varieties of Anglo-American vernacular music. You’ll hear unusual performers, uncommon instrumentation and great fiddlers from California to Ohio, New Mexico to West Virginia. Forget “Americana”, this collection shows Anglo-American down-home music as it actually was and in many cases (although largely unrecognized) still is. With painstaking audio restoration by the great Michael Kieffer (Origin Jazz Library).

A mixed selection of Jeff Buckley.

(None of the dorky covers from the first LP, though.)

None of those covers are dorky, I think they're beautiful. "Hallelujah" is played out, but "Lilac Wine" is so good.

"Corpus Christi Carol" is my favorite thing Jeff Buckley recorded. I'd go so far as to call it one of the most evocative songs in my entire collection--every time I hear it, I'm instantly transported to memories of my childhood Christmases, that sacred feel I would get from walking out of midnight mass onto a blanket of freshly fallen snow, my stomach full of butterflies in excitement for the next morning. Strange considering I never actually listened to this album during my childhood--it's a powerful thing to be able channel such a strong personal sense of time and place without actually having a tangible link to it.

I find the small body of work Buckley left to be patchy at best ("Grace" is hit-or-miss for me and I really only like "Morning Theft" from the posthumous album) but had he figured out how to rein it in a bit he had the potential to be a tremendous talent.
