"Watchmen" is the least terrible Snyder film.

Re: Movie: Man Of Steel (06-14-13)
Watchmen was my least favorite, but its a tough sell anyway. they were crazy for expecting it to be a blockbuster. Its not really movie material. Under the circumstances I thought he did a good job on it.
I loved 300. I think he nailed it. Frank Miller visual style and violence is usually a win for me. plus, I like my action flicks quick and to the point.
I liked Sucker Punch more than I probably should have. Its trash, but fun trash. especially the crazy samurai demon sword fight sequence. it wears thin by the end, but I enjoyed it.
Dawn of the Dead was cool. fuck the traditionalists, fast zombies are better.

Spiderman is his benchmark. That's a little like saying your benchmarks for literature and alcohol are Stephen King and Jose Cuervo.Harry Lime wrote:Don't you bad mouth Mike Shannon.harmless wrote:Oh dear. It looked OK until the closeups, the bad dialogue, the green space-blur CGI. I don't know who that 'villain' is but he's awful and obviously cast wrong.
Other than the shining moment when I saw that first trailer, I've had fairly consistently dwindling expectations for this. The trailer tricked me, I'll willingly admit. Now....I'm back to hoping it doesn't make me wish I'd snuck more scotch into the theater than I actually did.

Re: Movie: Man Of Steel (06-14-13)
Bond has had ebbs and flows and is a single character. This is a constant and neverending set.
I think it's just a subsegment of the turn of the century CGI masturbation phase. It's the same reason that so many otherwise cheeseball movies feel the need to aim for Lord of the Rings level scope in their fight scenes and so many stories seem like cookie cutter versions of the same basic idea....because, right now, American moviegoing is primarily thrill seeking in its intentions, and that's what the gameplan behind movie making is as a result. Superheroes are incredibly well-built for this intention.
It's no different than the terrible comedy subfactions that graced so much of the 90's, really, or the 'growing up is hard and stuff' garbage and SNL alumni comedy "greenlight it all" policy of the 80's. Movie culture, like music culture, became a little more fad-driven in the 80's as marketing finally and completely became king. Since then, it's just a matter of constant adjustment and refinement.

I was hoping we would see more sci fi movies pop up soon, but after oblivion, Star Trek and After Earth, that might not get very far. I don't see Elysium being a huge hit.

I'd love to see more Sci-Fi films like Moon and Children of Men. Less After Earth and John Carter.BurtReynolds wrote:I was hoping we would see more sci fi movies pop up soon, but after oblivion, Star Trek and After Earth, that might not get very far. I don't see Elysium being a huge hit.

Other than the Batman movies, I stopped watching 4 or 5 years ago. Although I did catch that Avengers thing on a plane trip. It was slightly better than the Everybody Loves Raymond marathon they were showing... only slightly.BurtReynolds wrote:not soon enough. Man, the only time I ever see anyone say anything negative about the Avengers movie is in RM-- and even then, I feel like McParadigm exaggerates more and more how much he disliked it.

I didn't think it was that amazing. A very good popcorn movie, but not the best superhero movie ever.theplatypus wrote:Man, the only time I ever see anyone say anything negative about the Avengers movie is in RM-- and even then, I feel like McParadigm exaggerates more and more how much he disliked it.

Definitely a great superhero movie, and a very entertaining action movie. They pulled off something no one had ever attempted before, and they did it with humor, wit and self-awareness, filled to the brim with geek-out moments. Even my snobby film friends like that flick.Monkey_Driven wrote:I didn't think it was that amazing. Honestly, all the action was so over-the-top and constant that I lost all connection to the story and characters.theplatypus wrote:Definitely a great superhero movie, and a very entertaining action movie. I loved it. Ii just want to see something else now. it was a great climax to the stories they've been telling for years.
