I never did care much for Gladiator. I would certainly call it Scott's most overrated film.

I don't understand how someone who can make movies as visually overwhelming as Legend, Blade Runner, or even Prometheus can then make a movie as visually incompetent as The Martian. Scott is a baffling director.

OR... maybe The Martian isn't visually incompetent.

No, it really is. It's over-edited. Shot selection is lazy and haphazard. Cinematography is flat. It's so bizarre, because Prometheus is just the opposite.

I'll agree some of the editing and shot choices are strange. I don't think the cinematography is flat, I really don't understand that criticism. Yet it continues to come up, so it really must just be me. But, yeah, there are some odd choices, for sure. I'm not confident using the word lazy, but I won't argue with haphazard.

Have you guys seen the extended cut of Gladiator? It's like a completely different movie. It becomes a political thriller instead of an action-driven revenge movie.

Personally, I don't think it improves the movie, but that's just me. It really does feel like something totally different.
