I like this already, but my first reaction, 5 tracks in, is that they are missing Kjartan.

Like any Sigur Ros album, this will take me many listens to fully digest, but I feel that it's their weakest album so far. I still really dig it though. It just doesn't seem like there will be a whole lot to discover with repeated listens.

I'm only part of the first track in (and we've already heard it) but I'm expecting Sigur Ros as a three-piece rock band. Which is fine by me; you're not going to get the same thickly layered soundscapes as you might have once, but they're doing other things to provide texture, like experimenting with percussion and song structure. The first track is gorgeous and will sound even better in good quality.

Track 2 is genuinely goosebump-inducingly amazing.

I love how the drum track kind of weaves its way in and out, and doesn't immediately make sense against the music, in track 4.

Track 2 and the title track are my clear favorites. I take back what I said in my initial impressions. This is a mighty fine Sigur Ros album. I put it on par with Med Sud or Takk. Maybe right between them.

This one could've so easily been overlong and bloated as well, considering the mood and tone. But it isn't.

'Yfirbord' might be an early favourite (apart from the singles we heard before). It's so sublimely weird and weirdly sublime.

I downloaded it today, but won't listen until tomorrow. Can't wait! I'll probably listen to it just once and wait for the vinyl after that; the re-issue of Hvarf/Heim is coming on the same day, too!

So good.

I do think it peters out very slightly in the last couple of tracks, and is more unique in the first half. That said, it doesn't overstay its welcome, so those starkly original standout tracks (like 'Yfirbord', imo) don't get lost amid too much generic stuff.

Apart from the obviously Oriental drums / percussion, the affected vocal in 'Yfirbord' which sounds a little like a low wind instrument, and some of the melodies, I'm really reminded of (I think) Chinese (or Thai?) folk singing in the chorus of 'Blapradur'. I'm not sure of the specifics and I've probably accidentally been racist here but it definitely carries a Far Eastern choral vibe to me.

I'm stoked. After seeing them in April in the monstrosity that is the UIC Pavillion, I get to see them at the Auditorium Theatre, which is probably one of the most beautiful, acoustically perfect venues in Chicago.
