Re: Round 1E: Dead Man vs. Speed of Sound vs. Black Red Yell
Dead Man is boring. Great atmosphere, but nothing worth listening to within it. There was some slight remix that appeared on itunes like a decade ago that was a bit improved, but this is definitley not a song I ever seek out.
I actually prefer the cacophony on Backspacer to the demo. the slightly disorienting noise feels appropriate, thematically. I actually wish they went further in that direction--something closer to sleight of hand. I don't think they could ultimately get where they wanted to with the country tinges in that song.
Black Red Yellow is one of the few examples of a playful song pre-Backspacer that is actually fun. I love everything about this song except maybe the dennis rodman answering machine bit. The instrumental breakdown, the main riff, eddie's double tracked vocals. This is a better song then a fair bit of No Code, and certainly should have been on the album over Mankind or Lukin (or I'm Open but that's doing something different)
BRY.

Black Red Yellow is one of the underrated b-sides. Pearl Jam's version of The Who featuring Dennis Rodman on answering machine.
Also, "Hormones firin'/Like a 50 foot Roman, yeah" is a great great line.

"Dead Man" is probably Ed's best "moody" song. Something like "Speed of Sound" comes off as completely plastic in comparison. "Black Red Yellow" is great, but I gotta go with "Dead Man".

Based on the fact that on seeing "Black Red Yellow" I started strutting around the office mumbling "Hormones firin'..." to confused onlookers:

I actually like all 3 of these, but for some reason BRY didn't always resonate with me. It does now, and has really grown on me. BRY gets my vote.

Yeah, this was actually a surprisingly difficult match for me. I really like all of these songs.

Speed if Sound is one of the best songs of Backspacer.
BRY is so much better tho.

Re: Round 1E: Dead Man vs. Speed of Sound vs. Black Red Yell
"Dead Man" and "BRY" are opposite sides of what was so great about Eddie's songwriting in 1995-6 -- a droning, low-pitched ballad and a fuzzy, lo-fi garage rocker. Tough match but I've gotta go with "Dead Man" for being the better raw compisition. "Speed of Sound" is okay but not in the same league.
