Gregors helmet also has a very narrow eye-slit, which is going to severely impact his peripheral vision. He'll miss wildly at some point in this encounter, which will carry his head too far off centre, and Barristan finishes him from the blind side.Kaius wrote:Aw man. Great point about Selmy's no-helmet tactic. He's going to be a lot faster than Gregor as well.Zantac Junkie wrote:He likely wins a lot of fights on intimidation alone. Barristan wouldn't be cowed by his reputation. Barristan also doesn't wear a helmet during single combat, which provides an appetizing target for Gregor. Yet, much like when he killed Khrazz, I think he uses this to his advantage by baiting Gregor into focusing on his head, while patiently waiting for his opening to counter.

That fight actually popped into my head when I thought of this matchup. So did Tim Sylvia - Randy Couture.

If he cuts angles and manages his range he should be able to position himself so that the blows he has to parry are glancing, diminishing their force. And the more the Mountain misses, the angrier he's going to get. You're never more vulnerable than when you're attacking, and Gregor's attacks will be more wild and wide open as his frustration increases.stip wrote:does barristan have the strength to parry those blows?

And eventually, he will slow down. Though, I don't think Selmy has to necessarily wait for that to happen. A side step and a thrust through one of the many gaps in that huge armor would be the end of the Mountain.

Exactly. There's only one person left in this thing that has a 50/50 shot against Barristan, I think. And it isn't the Mountain.Kaius wrote:And eventually, he will slow down. Barristan the Bold slays the Mountain that Rides, ending his reign of terror and preventing Clegane Bowl.

Alright. I will post our next match up, to set up the FINAL FOUR, and then I'm going to be MIA until tonight. So, keep it civil and make the right choice!

Victarion THE IRON CAPTAIN Greyjoy

Lord Captain of the Iron Fleet of House Greyjoy - Victarion is a large and powerful man, with a bull's broad chest and a boy's flat stomach. He wears plate armor in combat, a helm in the shape of a kraken, and wields a cruel axe. He's perhaps the greatest warrior in the recent history of the Ironborn, and one of the physically strongest characters in the series.
Wizards may be well and good, but blood and steel win wars. Bring me wine.
VS
Sandor THE HOUND Clegane

House Clegane | Sandor is a huge and heavily-muscled man. He regularly wears plain armor and a distinctive helm sculpted into the shape of a snarling dog's head. He is the only character in the series who has physically withstood his brother (even if the fight didn't go very long), meaning Sandor is one of the strongest men in the series. A fact that Jaime Lannister himself notes during a fight with Brienne. To make his fight with Gregor even more impressive, Sandor was apparently holding back given he pointedly avoided striking where Gregor was unarmored.
There are no true knights, no more than there are gods. If you can't protect yourself, die and get out of the way of those who can. Sharp steel and strong arms rule this world, don't ever believe any different.
