For some reason Johnny Guitar always reminds me a bit of dire straits in its playfulness. I can't fully explain why. But it is clever and profane and just a little bit filthy and there's not much like it in their catalog. One of the things Eddie doesn't get enough credit for on the last two albums is really growing with his ability to deliver on more complicated vocal melodies, and this is a great example.

Hard to Imagine is a nice song. It really comes into its own live, but the studio versions always felt a bit incomplete.

Cready Stomp is what it is.

Johnny Guitar.

Hard to Imagine.

Top 5 PJ verses a song that's better because of the stuff that surrounds it on the album versus a castoff nothing fart noise.

No contest.

Yeah, I love Johnny Guitar too. I feel bad about what I said in my previous post. It's a really good song.

Still, Hard to Imagine is one of my all time favorite songs by any band.

JG is one of only two I like from Backspacer, but not that much.

HTI by far.

Cready Stomp makes me think of bodysnatcher for some reason. I have no idea why.

Hard to Imagine is fine, but it doesn't offer anything that a bunch of other songs don't do better.
I'll echo Stip's points re: Johnny Guitar, and add that it's one of the few times in the PRAMG era that the band sounds energized and fully engaged in composing something fresh and interesting.

Speaking of bothersome Edward Vedder vocals, Stip, I really hate the way he sings "I hide my disappointment." Blech. He sounds so much like an old dad trying to sound like a young rock-n-roller.

Ok, this is where I begin my Johnny Guitar campaign. If there is any Backspacer song that's worthy of the 64 song tournament, it's this one. HTI is definitely a solid song and always a fun one to hear live, but JG is their BEST post-RA song. Period.

I'm not sure I'd put Johnny Guitar in the top 10 Post-RA songs, actually.

Parachutes
Army Reserve
Johnny Guitar
My Father's Son
Swallowed Whole

That would be my top 5 in some order

That's kind of what the song is poking fun of, in a way. But you're right, that particular delivery is not a highlight

Is it, though? I've never heard/read the song as making fun of creepy lame dad trying to recapture nonexistent rock and roll glory/youth. That's an interesting take.
