See my previous comments re: Eddie and spoken word for I'm Open.
I happen to quite like Hold On--all three versions. The one with the Ten era vocals, the slightly more subdued Lost Dogs re-recording, and the silly acoustic wanted dead or alive version. It's a hard song to take seriously, but it's an enjoyable guilty pleasure.
But not for you is top notch. The fact that it's a mid tier song on Vitalogy speaks to how unspeakably good that album is.

I like "Hold On," too -- I think the verses are a great showcase for Eddie's early voice, those throaty drawn-out vowel sounds minus the gargle. The live versions from 2009 were good, too. The chorus is kind of lame, but for a C-list throwaway from their first album -- you know, whatever.
"I'm Open" is lovely, verging on transcendent, once the spoken word section ends. Some of the finest studio work they've done, I'd argue. The spoken word section is deeply enough ingrained in my DNA to not be bothered by it, but I can certainly step back and see the ridiculousness in it.
"Not For You" isn't a favorite of mine -- too musically static for that -- but I do like the juxtaposition between the droning, suspended "E" of the main riff and that weird chant in the bridge, the only real musical change to (and therefore the emotional center of) the song. It's another one of those songs that hasn't necessarily aged terribly well live, so after a while of listening to live versions, hearing the studio version is like getting hit with a wrecking ball.
Vote for "NFY."

Here is my favorite version (PJ 20 disc 2 - great ending jam with Jack and the fellas).

I enjoy Not For You much less now than I did twenty years ago. Although usually I can get caught up in the storm once it's started. This one is easy though.

I liked it far more when I was younger and the whole teenage angst thing was paying off well. The older I've gotten, the further the song has moved down the rankings list, but it's still a damn fine song. That version I posted above reminds me of what I once loved so much about it.chewm wrote:I dont love Not For You as much as other people, but it still takes this easily.

100% Not For You
this looks to be, possibly for the first time ever on RM, an unanimous vote.
