I grew tired of Faithful pretty early on. I don't like eddie's wheezy/nasly vocal, I don't think the riff is particularly great, and the song feels like it's missing a final layer. The echoes line going into the chorus is great, but the rest of this song has only felt more and more pedantic to me as I've aged. For people who don't like Mind Your Manners because of its alleged anti-religious sentiment*, this is by far and away the more obnoxious song, despite both sharing the 'we can't rely on god, we have to rely on each other' message.

Present Tense has not aged well for me, but if I may paraphrase Army of Darkness, I found it beautiful once.

I'm not voting for a beatles cover.

Present Tense.

Faithfull might be the best Pearl Jam song ever.

I really love Faithfull and Presant Tense, but PT has some sentimental value for me that Faithfull doesn't.

It's a good one for sure, and definitely in my top 20. Could be higher, haven't done the ranking favorite prePRAMG in a while.

Faithfull. Present Tense is an absolutely gorgeous piece of music hamstrung by some shoddy lyrics, but Faithfull has and does it all. I've always thought the song acted as a good mission statement for what Yield was trying to so in general; it's accessible and welcoming, but deceptively unorthodox. It's taking chances like the band did on it's previous two records, but hiding those chances within the song instead of calling attention to them.

This.

Though it sounds like I value the lyrics to PT more than digster, the rest of this is spot on. As much as I love Present Tense, I have to go Faithfull.

I may be being a bit hard on those lyrics; I just remember them being a little too on-the-nose. That being said, the music is so gorgeous it hardly matters.

I don't know how the f this matchup is happening this early, Present Tense is great, but Faithfull is top 5-10 PJ for me.

"Present Tense" is beautifully produced but it doesn't do all that much for me as a whole anymore. "Faithfull", no contest.

I can't say anything further about Faithfull that hasn't already been said, one of the band's finest moments.

Present Tense is great, however. The lyrics do sound like they're cribbed from a hippy self-help manual but they don't bother me.

I think Present Tense might be my least favorite song on No Code now, but I still like it.

If I've learned anything from this edition of March Madness, it's that covers should not be included next year.

And sometimes the cover is actually the better song. Not in this case though. I love I've Got A Feeling. But even head to head, original v original... Faithfull wins.
