Re: Round G: Worldwide Suicie vs. Sad vs. Only Cloud in the
Only cloud in the sky is a pleasant instrumental, but it's up against two heavy hitters.
Sad and WWS are very similar songs to me, personally. I was not a huge fan (comparatively) of No Code. Yield was hit or miss. Tremendous highs but a lot of lows With a handful of exceptions Binaural and especially Riot Act were lacking in great fast songs. I was starting to get anxious as a fan.
Sad was a breath of fresh air when it came out. It had the moody atmospherics of Binaural but it knew how to move with them, rather than having them work against the core song (see Grievance). It had the energy that a song like Save You was lacking (a good song but not a standard bearer for the sound I wanted). I can't go so far as to say it restored my faith in the band, but it gave me hope that the stuff I was looking for was out there. It hasn't aged as well as I would have liked, but it's still a great song, and arguably the best thing to come out of the Binaural sessions.
World Wide Suicide, on the other hand, was a revelation. The anger, the energy, the sarcasm, the ferocity that was gradually sucked out in the last two albums came roaring back in a way that felt fun and furious and was exactly what I needed from my favorite band with a message that was on point (a bit on the nose but I certainly didn't care in 2006). It felt like, after years in the wilderness, Pearl Jam had come home. My second honeymoon with the band dates back to this song, and it's never left my top 10.
Sad is going to destroy it, but there are worse songs to lose to.
WWS.

I adore WWS, one of my favorites Pearl Jam singles, and it gets a lot of undeserved hate
I listened to the leaked demos yesterday and Only Cloud in the Sky was my favorite instrumental.
Too bad they are against Sad, one of my favorite things this band has ever done.

Sad, although this is a much closer matchup than it would have been a few years ago. WWS has risen in my estimation, and Sad has fallen, but not enough to let the former overtake the latter.

I want to vote for Only Cloud in the Sky because it's my favorite instrumental in this tournament. But it really drew the short straw here. I might change it to a ceremonial vote just to keep it from getting shut out if that's about to happen. But it would purely be ceremonial.

Only Cloud in the Sky is a nice enough instrumental. WWS is just an ok song for me. Sad is just so damn good, it's hard to believe it was never on a proper album.

Re: Round G: Worldwide Suicie vs. Sad vs. Only Cloud in the
I'm changing my vote from Sad to WWS. I know that Sad is the better song on paper -- it's got better production, the bridge is excellent, it's even got weird sounds at the end. It should be my favorite.
But I just enjoy WWS more. For everything they were going for on S/T, I think this is a song where they got it right. It's fun, it's catchy, it's political without being heavy-handed. Ed sounds great on it, and it was the first time that Matt's backing vox struck me as a really great addition to their palette. When Sad comes on, I think "I wish they still wrote songs like this." But when WWS come on, I don't think -- I just rock out and totally enjoy the song for what it is.
