Re: Kanye West
My only complaint here is that I miss the original version of "Fade" from that fashion show. It was more minimal, and banged a lot harder.

I knew I knew that sample on "Freestyle 4". But it's Goldfrapp, not Charade.

Re: Kanye West
The SNL performances were interesting in that he is by far the worst thing about his own music. Especially Ultra Light Beam, fantastic song, great choral arrangement, Chance just fucking kills it with a great verse...and then there's Kanye with dreadful fucking auto-tune, ruining his own song, that he made. And then the awful shout-out to his website that kills the whole vibe he just set up. It's just kind of absurd at this point. Just get out of your own way dude.

Nas is great. He has written some stone-cold classics, and had a big hand in shaping the aesthetic and ideology of hip-hop as we know it. "Life's a Bitch" kind of changed my life. Technically, he's a "better" rapper than Ye, and his wordplay skills are superior.
But, these days, I find myself less compelled by his overtly "conscious" sociopolitical lyrics than Kanye's dizzying confluence of identity, politics, fashion, ego, insecurity, irony, self-awareness, humor, race, bravado, etc. Nas is certainly illuminating, but I think, ultimately, Ye is operating on a much more profound, personal, and insightful level. And Ye has a much more sophisticated grasp of narrative and perspective. He speaks to me way more directly.

Well nowadays Nas is basically retired, but looking at their primes, there's really no comparison.

I need to go dig into Chance's first album a lot deeper, because every time I hear him guest on something it's some of the best shit I've ever heard.Mecca wrote:Orph, I see you

I will agree that the autotune on ULB on SNL was very awkward. I loved the whole presentation as performance art, but he should just given raw vocals like on the album.

It's useless to argue with you, so I won't, but you should probably listen to more Nas.LoathedVermin72 wrote:Agreed. Kanye is far superior.Orpheus wrote:Well nowadays Nas is basically retired, but looking at their primes, there's really no comparison.

Re: Kanye West
I'm glad to hear that. But it's seriously getting to the point with him where I don't believe he's making the music almost. Like how can you make music that great and have a persona and rapping ability (in my opinion) that bad. It's really kind of bizarre.LoathedVermin72 wrote:I will agree that the autotune on ULB on SNL was very awkward. I wish he would just say fuck it and make an album where he just produces, cause it would be really, really great.
