Re: Round H: Even Flow vs. Severed Hand vs. Green Disease
Like SOLAT, Even Flow has been played so many times i don't ever really feel the need to hear it anymore. But it's still an amazing song.
Severed Hand was a great concept that sounds a bit neutered on the album--shockingly so, given how loud and powerful the songs that precede it are.
Green Disease has that G-R-E-E-D sequence, which is the most embarrassing thing pearl jam has ever put on a studio record, and has always killed what is a fun little song for me.

Hmmm, I need to listen to Even Flow and Severed Hand side by side. I never liked Even Flow as much everyone else and Severed Hand is a good PRAMG song.
Yeah, after listening to them I have to say I'd much rather listen to Severed Hand nowadays. Vote for that one.

Tough one between Severed Hand and Green Disease.
Voted for Green Disease but I might change my vote later.

Even Flow, fairly easily. Two more modern songs that never did much of anything for me. I think I dislike Green Disease all the more because it's the one out-and-out dud on Riot Act, at a time when the band didn't typically release songs that were straight-up poor.
I listened to State College '03 recently for the first time, and was struck by Even Flow, particularly what Stone and Mike were doing in the jam. I don't know if this is par-for-the-course for that year, but they were willing to get noisy and wander off the pentatonic blues scale reservation for a while. It reminded me why I like Even Flow in the first place, so the poll's coming at a good time.

Man, I love GD. I thought it was an interesting direction change as they kinda went into new wave / REM territory. At the time they were also listening to the Police (Driven To Tears at least), and it seemed they may explore that road a bit more. But GD does seem to be more of a one-off.digster wrote:Even Flow, fairly easily. Two more modern songs that never did much of anything for me. Re: Round H: Even Flow vs. Severed Hand vs. Green Disease
I am always surprised by the reputation "Green Disease" apparently has -- I think it's a fantastic song, with a clever contrast between the urgent, harmonically tense first half to the brighter, poppier second. It gets its message across in clear language without being dumb about it (minus the G-R-E-E-D thing, which is silly but ultimately a non-issue for me, no more aesthetically blighting than all those dumb "YOW!"s and "aw huh yeah"s in "Even Flow"), and covers a lot of musical ground in a short time.
I maintain that "Even Flow" is a completely average composition. Very little about it excites me these days, and unlike some other songs ("RVM" and "Not For You," for example), it's not a case of going back and being blown away by the studio version after long periods of "boring live version" burnout. It's just a good memory for me at this point.
"Severed Hand" is fine, but my vote is for "Green Disease."

I heard Even Flow Boston 94 the other day. It's awesome. I often forget that after so many Matt Cameron versions.

I really love all of these songs. Each is one of my favorites from its respective album.
But Even Flow... I've said it before and I'll say it again... is one of the single greatest rock and roll songs I've ever heard. Gotta be EF.
