I'm pretty sure they're not omitting mentions of Beth for the fans; I suspect Ed is probably doing it for himself and his current wife. And honestly, while as a listener I find it frustrating, as a husband I completely understand and respect why he does it.

That said, I would much prefer they do it this way and just omit the song altogether, rather than genetically modify the actual content of the song a la "Oceans" from Unplugged.
I kind of feel like having to go through the act of discussing and then excising something like that would be an extremely more awkward situation than just finding some other performance, or even just leaving it in.
agreed. "yeah hun, i used to be in love w/ that woman, thats why i sang her name". is that gonna end a marriage?

I would assume that these thoughts have crossed people's minds, and if no one was bothered they wouldn't be doing it.
so u think eddie vedder's wife is shallow enough to be offended that he used to sing the womans name he was in love with before he met her?

its fuckin lame no matter how you cut it.
It's not about shallowness, or about whether or not it's going to immediately result in a divorce; it's probably just a general respect Ed is trying to show his current wife. I mean, I know my wife had men in her life before me, but I wouldn't necessarily want her releasing any of her love letters to them to the public.
i think its pretty shallow. its not like he's still singing "oh beth".
I think it's super lame as well, but to each their own. I guess it comes down to how comfortable you are in your current relationship. It's a big leap to assume that this has more to do with Ed and his current wife, and less to do with Ed and inner Ed.

I highly doubt that either Ed or his wife are gonna be sitting down and listening to this live show, ever. So why care?

I have no idea of the details of what went down with Ed and Beth... maybe these are just digs at her :haha:

You could probably make a decent youtube clip series of grammatically corrected rock songs.

No, I have a Bob Marley release and the liner notes admit to having to do that and is the reason by a loss in audio quality. Just be upfront and truthful about things and it (and most things) are not an issue.
Think I’m going to try being kind to everyone a chance.

it might have bothered me. I didn't like it when that happened on those Meadowlands shows from the 06 tour. But maybe that's just me.

There's just no way that Ed and his wife sit around listening to Pearl Jam shows.

I'd say its more likely that the girl really hurt Ed, and misguided or not he wanted to remove the memory of her from that recording.

Agreed. Whether the above is the case or if it were done with an intention not to hurt the feelings of Ed's current wife, neither scenario is terribly complimentary to anyone involved.

When Ed sang her name in those songs, he effectively made it part of the performance. Regardless of which explanation for the removal is accurate, the end result is that the release is weakened by the omission. Not fatally, it's still enjoyable to listen to (and I'd prefer editing or deleting than whatever black magic they tried to work on that version of Oceans from Unplugged), but I think it's a legitimate complaint.
