As good as Brain of J is, Alive remains the definitive pearl jam song. Arguably their best riff with its slow, portentous energy, great performance from eddie, and they have nothing better than that outro.

Like a lot of "Ten" songs, "Alive" works better for me now as a memory than as a great piece of music. Every once in a while, I'll hear it and find myself surprisingly overcome by the same enthusiasm I felt for it as an adolescent, but more often it feels like a dinosaur anthem with no modern relevance to me whatsoever.

I have all those same sentimental connections to "Brain of J," but unlike "Alive" this song feels ever vital -- as soon as that Irons fill rips the song open, my adrenaline is off and running. It's one of the great ones.

Brain of J. It's one of those perfect encapsulations of what PJ can do well when it cranks the volume and the tempo. And the chorus melody really hits me in a way a lot of their other up-tempo songs don't. There's this melancholy to the way he sings "the whole world will be different soon;" it's plaintive in comparison to the barking dog Ed turns into during the verse.

I like Brain of J a lot, and my shell has grown hard enough that these results can no longer hurt me

Brain of J has always been fresh. From the 95 tour versions all the way to Ed the barber.

Alive is mostly stale for me at this point.
