I think her performances feel too trained. She comes off very stilted and "actorly" to me, and in the worst way. I never believe her, especially since a lot of her roles call for some grit and naturalism (Zero Dark Thirty...ugggghhhh).tragabigzanda wrote:I think she conveys both intelligence and vulnerability really well. She definitely strikes me having been trained at Juliard -- she's got that sort of composure about her. The only thing that bothers me sometimes is that her voice sounds very fragile, which sometimes makes her sound weak (Kevin Costner has the same problem).

How about Gillian Andersons voice in the new X-Files. I've been wondering if anyone else has noticed that - she sounds like Miles Davis, half of it is whispering.tragabigzanda wrote:I think she conveys both intelligence and vulnerability really well. I'd call her good, but not great. She conveys her characters very well without imbuing them with anything beyond what's on the page.

Crimson Peak was the closest I've come to liking her, because it calls for something a little over-the-top and actorly.tragabigzanda wrote:I can see that, I can definitely see the "training" you're talking about. I think that so far it's worked for her characters. For example, her character in ZDT would probably be overly composed given that she's a young woman in such intense circumstances. I'd love to see something where she really lets go, lets herself get raw and messy.LoathedVermin72 wrote:I think her performances feel too trained. Still further than I would go, but I'm sure a lot of the scripts she chooses aren't helping her.McParadigm wrote:I can see where you're coming from on that.LoathedVermin72 wrote:I think her performances feel too trained. I like her. And she was outstanding in Zero Dark Thirty. She's not elite. She's not one of the all time greats. She's not Meryl or Gillian Anderson or Julian Moore. But she's got real chops. And so far I've believed her in every role I've seen her in. And she's just a lovely human being.

Can't believe The Stand can't crack your top 5tragabigzanda wrote:Also a huge fan. It was one of his first books I ever read as a teen, and I counted it as one of my favorites for a long time. Salem's Lot
The Shining
Heart in Atlantis
11/22/63
The Dead Zone
I've not read any Dark Tower books beyond The Gunslinger, simply because I want to read all his stand-alone books before tackling that series. Only have a handful left to get through, but keep putting off poorly-reviewed ones like Rose Madder and Dreamcatcher.
Just finished Revival a few days ago, I put a brief review in the "Currently Reading" thread.
