Re: The Simpsons Song Tournament - SEMIFINALS VOTING NOW
doug and EJ both have fucking monsters at the top of their rosters--Monorail and Dr. Zaius are The Simpsons at its absolute best when it comes to parody, inventiveness, and glee. When it comes to the rest of their teams, I think they both have a serious weakness: too much Homer. doug has 4 songs and EJ has 3 that feature Homer in a prominent role, and I feel like this lack of diversity makes them one dimensional. So I feel like the best way to pick may be to look at the non-Homer songs. I love "Send in the Clowns" for the way it starts off as maybe a joke but turns into a tender moment at the end (as I've mentioned before in this thread: jokes are great, but I love when The Simpsons uses music to elicit different sorts of responses). But there's a hidden gem that's clouding all of this back-and-forth I'm pretending to have: "My Ding-A-Ling." Holy shit. This one somehow wasn't on my radar when I was thinking of songs to pick, and it's one of my favorite moments of the series. Just the way Skinner reacts with vehement anger sells it for me. So I'm voting for EJ.
Oh, and me. I'm voting for me.

Jorge's vote made the doug-EJ match a tie, so next vote decides it and we'll move onto the finals.

If someone has a beef with either doug or EJ, this would be the perfect time to exact revenge.

EJ and stip.
Each are headed up by a powerhouse song (Monorail and Softball). The more minor classics of Hail to the Bus Driver and My Ding a Ling was the difference in EJs matchup.

I have a visceral reaction to advertising and promotion. There's just something about salesmanship that grates on me on a very base level and I react very negatively towards it. I want those people to suffer and I want their enterprises to fail.

Re: The Simpsons Song Tournament - VOTE IN FINALS UNTIL 2/26
I'm obviously voting for myself, so I'm going to use this post to explain why you should vote for me!
EJ has some very good songs from The Simpsons on his team. As the first picker in the first round, he was able to snag what I do believe is the series' high point, musically: "The Monorail Song." You all know why it was picked first, so why go on about it some more? I also thought the "S-M-R-T Song" was a bold choice for the second round; it's hilarious in context, even if as a song it isn't inventive, and all of us have sung it at some point in our lives (even if just to ourselves) when we've made a horrible decision. But I feel like his team begins to thin out after that, and one reason for it is an over-reliance on Homer's ridiculousness to sell the humor in the other songs. The Moventarian Cult song is sort of "meh" if it isn't for Homer's "Batman" at the end, and the "Da Da Da Da Da Da" pick, while inspired, does rely again on Homer's brain and how it works in strange ways. I just don't think the team is diverse enough. But, yes, "My Ding-a-Ling" is an awesome pick.
Here's why you should vote for me! I aimed to be as diverse with my picks as possible, to assemble a team that really shows how incredible the music featured in The Simpsons is. "Who Needs the Qwik-E-Mart" is my only "big musical number" because I thought it was important to represent what the show does so well (in great songs like this one and Monorail, Stonecutters, etc.), and because it's a song that's both care-free and--in the end--mellow and sad. "Can I Borrow A Feeling?" comes from a long tradition of--and, in my opinion, it's the best example of--people on The Simpsons with no business singing belting their heart out. I chose "Flaming Moe's" because I wanted a song that showcased the show's love of parody. "There's A Kind of Hush" is a throw-away joke, but is a great example of how musical non-sequiturs (Why the hell did Lenny choose that song to sing to his ball?) can bring a laugh. "The Mediocre Presidents" seems like another "big musical number," but it actually comes from another vein of the show's history entirely: musicals within the show (think Streetcar and Planet of the Apes); I think it's a notch below those other two examples, but the timing in this piece is just perfect. Finally, I picked "Happy Birthday, Mr. Smithers" because of how raunchy the whole thing is; it's a wonderful vision of Smithers' subconscious.
In summation: vote for me!
