TV: Better Call Saul

Kim's father's favorite movie, which her and Jimmy watch together before he gets that call from his boss, becomes the name Saul uses for his holding company in Breaking Bad. "Ice Station Zebra Associates."

These are the kind of references I love-- not so much knowing winks at the audience but splashes of color that resignify what we know about the character, like Saul's false bravado. All of Saul's obnoxious garishness, like the pinkie ring? Turns out he's just a sentimental sap.

I really like this show.

I'm continually amazed at good this show is. How are they going to handle Jimmy's own version of breaking bad?

This has quietly become one of my favorite shows. The pacing is excellent. Nothing feels rushed or too slow. It really seems like they know exactly the story they want to tell and know all of the character arcs.

-Is Mike's daughter-in-law paranoid/hallucinating the gunshots? That was my takeaway, but I'm not entirely sure.

that seems to be the case, as mike was parked outside all night watching. i'm trying to remember - in BB, is the DIL still in the picture and taking care of her kid, or is mike his granddaughter's caretaker? i know he breaks bad to ensure his granddaughter is taken care of - maybe the DIL loses her shit and is locked away?

Some random thoughts on the last episode:

-I loved watching Jimmy's handling of the commercial. He has a natural gift for storytelling -- he took one look at the earlier commercial the firm aired, and knew it was too boring and overly-informative to appeal to a broad, elderly audience. So it was great fun watching him compose an ad with some real emotion. He's a natural born showman, and I think we'll see more of that evolve as he morphs into Saul.

-Did anyone else catch the the interior of Mike's car was new? I love that they followed through on this detail from last week's ep, without actually calling attention to it.

-Is Mike's daughter-in-law paranoid/hallucinating the gunshots? That was my takeaway, but I'm not entirely sure.

She's either hallucinating or playing Mike a little to get him to help her out

I think she's just paranoid. Her husband had been killed for ratting out cops. And her emotional instability is probably what makes Mike go from "caring grandfather" to essentially being his granddaughters benefactor- requiring him to cross the lines he wouldnt previously.

Constantly impressed by this show. It really is its own little world. I enjoy the subtle connections to Breaking Bad but I seem to enjoy the characters more in Better Call Saul.

Breaking Bad was a character piece for Walt, whereas we're getting more fleshed out support characters in Saul. Mike is as much a lead as Saul in some respects. It's helpful that there are established characters being presented, because they can focus more on their mythology as opposed to getting to know them first.
