I assumed that just meant any new music moving forward rather than they have new music int he pipeline ready to release.

A little under a year ago, the three members of RNDM - Pearl Jam bassist Jeff Ament, singer/songwriter Joseph Arthur and drummer Richard Stuverud - got together to began sketching out ideas for their new LP, Ghost Riding (out March 4th), a follow-up to their 2012 debut Acts. "We said to each other, 'What is the spirit album for this record?'" says Ament. "We started throwing out experimental albums back and forth that we love, like Laughing Stock by Talk Talk, David Sylvian's Brilliant Trees and Gone to Earth, some of the most experimental Bowie albums, Bauhaus and the first couple of Peter Gabriel records."

Acts was recorded in about a week, but this new way of working required a much greater time commitment. After three weeks in Montana, they moved shop to Stone Gossard's Seattle studio for another few weeks. Mixing took three months. "I don't think I've ever spend that much time on a record in my entire career," says Gossard. "I think it was because we didn't know what it was. We kept throwing paint on the canvas and paint on the canvas and at some point, we had to start actually taking some paint off the canvas or starting over."

Would be nice if this sense of experimentation and commitment followed through to album 11.

Seriously -- I'm a little shocked at Stone's involvement, given his apparent boredom with PJ, and the more direct approach his recent solo music has taken. Good to know that at least 2 of the 5 guys in PJ still enjoy tinkering in the studio with no real endgame in mind.

I almost thought the Stone thing was a typo.

I wonder how much this is driven by Vedder, I get the sense that both he and BOB seem to place a high value on "working fast" and I think that flows through to the lightweight substance of the last two records.

Yeah if I had to guess who is driving that it's definitely Vedder/BOB.

I recently came across this quote from a Billboard article when Lightning Bolt was released:

"Vedder thinks part of that maturity is 'being less precious about the records and maybe trying to put out more material. The irony is that I'm saying this after taking four years to get this one out. Now I think we've had enough thinking or talking about the past, and it just feels like a good time to be prolific, take advantage of this opportunity. Because it is pretty rare, if nothing else.'"

Hmm, sounds like a refreshing idea fellas! I remember thinking at the time that this could mean more "chocolate egg" experiments, like Ole, or perhaps even some EPs, instrumentals, demos, etc. But... not holding my breath. Now that Jeff is married... and Stone seems uninterested... who's left to be prolific?

I don't know. I think there's talk of getting together and throwing some ideas together. There's no plan of making a record yet. When we got together in South America [late last year] there was lots of talk of how we wanted to do it and in what ways we wanted it to be different, what things we liked about the last record. It's just in the planning stages and everyone deciding when the time is. Usually it just takes somebody to call somebody else and be like, "Hey, do you want to go into the studio next month?" And that just hasn't happened yet.

Wrapping up, I want to get back to the next record. Do you think you'll begin in later this year? Next year? Any idea on the timeline?

You are very clearly a talented comedy writer.

I just read that Jeff interview, and he mentions that Matt's been in the band for almost 20 years. That's a weird thing to realize. They had four different drummers in an eight year span, and then just the one for the last seventeen. It seems really skewed when you think about the fact that Matt's only recorded with them for four of their ten albums.
