Before the modern primary system all conventions were brokered, I believe.

the 1976 republican convention was the last brokered convention. They used to be standard. In 1932 it took 3 rounds of voting to agree on FDR. In 1920 I believe there were over 100 votes before the democrats agreed on who would be sent to the slaughter.
