I've thought about this "religious liberty" thing quite a bit, and I'd like to know what other people think. I strongly believe that sexual orientation and gender identity should be federally protected class like race, age, sex, disability, and--yes--religion. If someone wants to deny goods and services, or to evict, or to fire someone because they're gay or trans, then there should be intervention, just like if a woman was fired for getting pregnant or a black person were denied housing because it might "hurt property value." However, I do have a tiny bit of sympathy when it comes to people who provide on-site services--caterers, decorators, and so on--who'd rather not participate in something like a gay wedding, since they could make an argument that it affects their brand in a way that they can't control (due to pictures, videos, and posts that could show up on social media, for example). But what gets lost when a moderator asks a question like that and frames it as such is that it's such a tiny, fucking minuscule issue--how many times has this actually happened? There was that whole kerfuffle about the pizza place that said they wouldn't cater a gay wedding, but it's not like they actually denied anyone service--it was in response to a hypothetical question. About whether a pizza place would cater a gay wedding. About whether...a pizza place...would cater...a gay wedding. C'mon!

And yes, Kasich's response was measured and he was trying to draw a fine line without sounding too dogmatic. But if he wanted to sound like a fucking adult, he would've refused to answer that question and asked what everyone else wanted to do to try and reduce suicide rates among LGBT youth. Life and death is an issue--getting squeamish about two guys eating your cupcakes and then touching dicks an hour later is not.
