V 61: Brain of J vs Rearviewmirror

Stip -- I don't see Strat's post as trying to portray "Brain of J" as a complex song; to me it simply attempts to articulate (very well, I might add) why the song produces exactly the kind of visceral, knee-jerk reaction you describe with "RVM." It's a simple composition, but there's a lot going on it, all of which contributes to the overall blunt impact of the song.

I like "RVM" a lot but this is not a contest for me. "Brain of J."

Brain of J has always just been missing something for me, and it's something substantive. I love the music and the performances. It's a great song. But it's a great song that doesn't actually take me anywhere. A fun aggressive moment that doesn't quite reach the elemental heights of go.

This would have been an easy choice for RVM from me a few years ago, but Brain of J and RVM are pretty close in terms of how I view them. The fact that Brain of J is a somewhat more modest song in ambition shouldn't mark against it; the chorus may be my favorite (or one of them) that PJ has ever written. It's catchy but manages to surprise you, too. I'll say Brain.

"Go" and "Brain of J." are literally my two favorite PJ songs, so it's gonna kinda blow my mind if they're the two finalists.
